The research program funded by <abbr>NASA<\/abbr> has operated five long-duration planetary surface missions on the Mars-like flank of Mauna Loa to investigate crew composition and cohesion, since 2012.<\/p>\n<p><abbr>HI-SEAS<\/abbr> Mission <abbr title=\"six\">VI<\/abbr> was cancelled February 26, after one of the four crew members withdrew. A few days earlier, an accident involving a crew member triggered an institutional review by <abbr>UH<\/abbr> and <abbr>NASA<\/abbr>, which has since been completed, and the project has been approved to go forward.<\/p>\n<p>The <abbr>NASA<\/abbr> Human Research Roadmap has a tight timeline to enable human exploration of the solar system. So, rather than conduct a new Mission <abbr title=\"seven\">VII<\/abbr>, <abbr>NASA<\/abbr> asked the <abbr>HI-SEAS<\/abbr> team to rescope the final phase of the project to cover data mining over the six-year life of the project, and the development of a comprehensive database. <abbr>NASA<\/abbr> is providing additional funds for a more robust version of the data analysis than had already been planned for the end of the six <abbr>HI-SEAS<\/abbr> missions.<\/p>\n<p>Principal Investigator and <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M&#257;noa Professor <strong>Kim Binsted<\/strong> said, &ldquo;We\u2019re excited to be able to put the 36 months\u2019 worth of mission data we\u2019ve collected over the past five years to good use: advancing human space exploration.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Under the new grant, <abbr>HI-SEAS<\/abbr> will:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Perform data mining of all <abbr>HI-SEAS<\/abbr> data (Missions <abbr title=\"one\">I<\/abbr>&#8211;<abbr title=\"five\">V<\/abbr>) related to team composition, including investigation of individual personalities, cognitive function and behavioral health changes, as all of these influence team performance.<\/li>\n<li>Develop a database of all <abbr>HI-SEAS<\/abbr> data funded by <abbr>NASA<\/abbr> to include data from <abbr>HI-SEAS<\/abbr> collaborators.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><abbr>HI-SEAS<\/abbr> investigators expect to complete the data collection and analysis by the end of 2019.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The research program has operated five planetary surface missions on the Mars-like flank of Mauna Loa to investigate crew composition and cohesion.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":16,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[30],"tags":[442,1363,911,174,9],"class_list":["post-88652","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-research","tag-hi-seas","tag-manoa-research","tag-program-recognition","tag-space","tag-uh-manoa","entry","has-media"],"aioseo_notices":[],"jetpack_featured_media_url":"","_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/88652","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/16"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=88652"}],"version-history":[{"count":9,"href":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/88652\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":88662,"href":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/88652\/revisions\/88662"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=88652"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=88652"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=88652"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
