accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen data-no-lazy=\"1\" data-skipgform_ajax_framebjll=\"\"><\/iframe><\/div><\/div><\/figure><\/div>\n<p>A team from the <a href=\"http:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/\">University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> at M\u0101noa<\/a> hosted the annual Be a Scientist Night for children at the <a href=\"https:\/\/ihshawaii.org\/\">Institute for Human Services<\/a> (<abbr>IHS<\/abbr>) women\u2019s shelter on December 7.<\/p>\n<p>This event featured interactive stations for virtual reality, robotics and more, exposing children at the shelter to different <abbr>STEM<\/abbr> (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) related activities and careers.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/manoa-math-ihs-science-night.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/manoa-math-ihs-science-night-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"Girl controlling small robots with a tablet, click for larger image\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-88618\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/manoa-math-ihs-science-night-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/manoa-math-ihs-science-night-630x353.jpg 630w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/manoa-math-ihs-science-night.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Mathematics Professor <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/math.hawaii.edu\/wordpress\/people\/chyba\/\">Monique Chyba<\/a><\/strong> has organized the event for the past eight years and sees it as a big opportunity for her students, some of whom will go on to educate others.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;A lot of them who are here tonight are going to be future teachers,&rdquo; said Chyba. &ldquo;And being here really like enforces the idea that this is meaningful and this is important.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p><abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa student <strong>Nicole Trube<\/strong> was one of the event\u2019s volunteers. &ldquo;I really want to help out and give them a chance to feel involved in a community and get to learn some really amazing things here,&rdquo; she said.<\/p>\n<p><abbr>IHS<\/abbr> staff say the event gives the children a chance to participate in things they would not otherwise experience.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;I feel like that will pretty much interest our children to become more engaged and be more hungry for more learning,&rdquo;
