Burns School of Medicine<\/a> (<abbr>JABSOM<\/abbr>) at the <a href=\"https:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/\">University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> at M&#257;noa<\/a> have successfully developed a vaccine candidate for the Zika virus, showing that it is effective in protecting both mice and monkeys from the infection.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_88225\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-88225\" style=\"width: 214px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/manoa-jabsom-lehrer-headshot-214x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"214\" height=\"300\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-88225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/manoa-jabsom-lehrer-headshot-214x300.jpg 214w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/manoa-jabsom-lehrer-headshot.jpg 250w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 214px) 100vw, 214px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-88225\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Axel Lehrer<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Demonstrating the effectiveness of their vaccine candidate in monkeys (non-human primates) is an important milestone since it typically predicts whether the vaccine will work in humans, enabling further clinical development.<\/p>\n<p>A strong global initiative to battle Zika has produced more than 30 vaccine candidates since outbreaks in 2015&#8211;2016 in Brazil linked the infection in some pregnant women to severe birth defects in their newborns.
