In November, culinary students in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kapiolani.hawaii.edu\/\"><span aria-label=\"Kapiolani\">Kapi&#699;olani<\/span> Community College<\/a>\u2019s advanced professional certificate program competed in the &ldquo;Bring on the Bento&rdquo; healthy bento competition.<\/p>\n<p>Eight finalists put their best food forward.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>T. Alana<\/strong>&#8211;Chicken loco moco<\/li>\n<li><strong>Mychelle Coon<\/strong>&#8211;Sweet and spicy vegetarian chili<\/li>\n<li><strong>Lee Ann Young<\/strong>&#8211;Gomoku rice and chicken bento<\/li>\n<li><strong>Ace Cabango<\/strong>&#8211;Teriyaki salmon bento with roasted kabocha and snap peas<\/li>\n<li><strong>Primo Mateo<\/strong>&#8211;Pastele stew and gandule rice<\/li>\n<li><strong>Jeongyeon Shim<\/strong>&#8211;Fiery spicy pork bowl<\/li>\n<li><strong>Cindy Nakabayashi<\/strong>&#8211;Orange chicken bowl<\/li>\n<li><strong>Nohea Banner<\/strong>&#8211;Vegan Indian\/Thai fusion curry with brown rice, vegan naan bread<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<figure id=\"attachment_88060\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-88060\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/kapiolani-bento-competition-primo-mateo-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"culinary student making stew\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-88060\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/kapiolani-bento-competition-primo-mateo-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/kapiolani-bento-competition-primo-mateo-630x353.jpg 630w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/kapiolani-bento-competition-primo-mateo.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-88060\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The winner Primo Mateo making pastele stew and gandule rice for the competition.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&ldquo;Sometimes people think that healthy food tastes junk, and so I think the dishes the students created that have less than 10 grams of fat per serving&#8211;people will realize that healthy food actually tastes good,&rdquo; said <span aria-label=\"Kapiolani\">Kapi&#699;olani<\/span> <abbr title=\"Community College\">CC<\/abbr> Culinary Arts Instructor <strong>Lauren Tamamoto<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/7elevenhawaii.com\/\">7-Eleven <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span><\/a> partnered with <span aria-label=\"Kapiolani\">Kapi&#699;olani<\/span> Community College to develop a better-for-you bento or bowl for potential sale at all 7-Eleven <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> locations for a limited time in 2019.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;7-Eleven wants to be everybody\u2019s favorite neighborhood store,&rdquo; said Greg Hanna, 7-Eleven <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> president and <abbr title=\"Chief Executive Officer\">CEO<\/abbr>. &ldquo;If we can bring the food from a <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> student into our stores, I think it will be great for the community.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>The contestants\u2019 dishes had to contain at least two locally grown ingredients and have no more than 700 calories. The bentos or bowls also had to be able to withstand four hours under a heat lamp.<\/p>\n<p>Primo Mateo\u2019s pastele stew and gandule rice took first place honors and a $1,000 prize, with Mychelle Coon\u2019s sweet and spicy vegetarian chili a close second. Ace Cabango took third place with his teriyaki salmon bento with roasted kabocha and snap peas.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;I am very excited.
