On the same day in 1843, Great Britain and France signed a proclamation recognizing the independence and sovereignty of the Hawaiian nation.<\/p>\n<p>To mark the 175th anniversary, the morning started with a ceremonial event at an <a href=\"http:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/hshk\/the-school\/about-us\/about-uh-manoa-campus-ahu\/\">ahu (Hawaiian shrine)<\/a> on the M&#257;noa campus led by Hale Mua o <span aria-label=\"Kualii\">K&#363;ali&#699;i<\/span> on behalf of <a href=\"http:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/hshk\/\"><span aria-label=\"Hawaiinuiakea\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½nui&#257;kea<\/span> School of Hawaiian Knowledge<\/a> Dean <a href=\"http:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/hshk\/the-school\/people\/deans-office\/jonathan-osorio\/\"><strong>Jonathan Osorio<\/strong><\/a> and <abbr title=\"doctor of philosophy\">PhD<\/abbr> student <strong>Kalani&#257;kea Wilson<\/strong>. The gathering of Hawaiian leaders conducted an <span aria-label=\"awa\">&#699;awa<\/span> (Hawaiian kava drink) ceremony near Bachman Hall to recognize the k&#363;puna who built the ahu and to remember their wise instructions in moving forward.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_88055\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-88055\" style=\"width: 240px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/manoa-hawaii-independence-day-inset-240x300.jpg\" alt=\"stone structure\" width=\"240\" height=\"300\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-88055\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/manoa-hawaii-independence-day-inset-240x300.jpg 240w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/manoa-hawaii-independence-day-inset.jpg 636w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 240px) 100vw, 240px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-88055\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The sacred ahu near Bachman.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&ldquo;The purpose of this ceremony was for us to dedicate ourselves to making <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> M&#257;noa a truly Hawaiian place of learning,&rdquo; said Osorio. &ldquo;That commitment means being willing to engage in deeper and stronger conversations to get everyone to understand how important it is to honor our sacred places and the places we care for.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;We have set up spaces on this campus that really signify who we are, the descendants of a wise and vigorous people, and these spaces are meant to remind us of them, our ancestors, and to keep us in a relationship with them,&rdquo; added Osorio. &ldquo;So the spaces and the ceremonies are meaningful to us and we ask the whole university community to honor that and to treat these ahu with the respect that they feel for us and our culture.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>A shirt screen-printing activity was held at mid-day in the Campus Center courtyard by <a href=\"https:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/nhss\/\">Native Hawaiian Student Services<\/a> titled, &ldquo;What does Ea mean to you?&rdquo; Ea has multiple meanings, including sovereignty, rule, independence, life, air, breath and to rise.<\/p>\n<p>The final L&#257; <span aria-label=\"Kuokoa\">K&#363;&#699;oko&#699;a<\/span> event at the Hemenway Hall courtyard was a panel discussion on <span aria-label=\"olelo\">&#699;&#333;lelo<\/span> <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> featuring noted Hawaiian educators <a href=\"https:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/hshk\/the-school\/people\/kawaihuelani\/christopher-kaliko-baker\/\"><strong>Kaliko Baker<\/strong><\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/hshk\/the-school\/people\/kawaihuelani\/kahikina-de-silva\/\"><strong>Kahikina de Silva<\/strong><\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/hshk\/the-school\/people\/kawaihuelani\/presley-ke%ca%bbalaanuhea-ah-mook-sang\/\"><strong><span aria-label=\"Kealaanuhea\">Ke&#699;alaanuhea<\/span> Ah Mook Sang<\/strong><\/a>, along with music and performances.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Several events mark the 175th anniversary of Great Britain and France recognizing sovereignty.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":16,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[26],"tags":[33,551,1465,9],"class_list":["post-88009","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-community","tag-hawaiian","tag-hawaiinuiakea-school-of-hawaiian-knowledge","tag-manoa-native-hawaiian-place-of-learning","tag-uh-manoa","entry","has-media"],"aioseo_notices":[],"jetpack_featured_media_url":"","_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/88009","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/16"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=88009"}],"version-history":[{"count":23,"href":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/88009\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":174129,"href":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/88009\/revisions\/174129"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=88009"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=88009"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=88009"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
