(Credit: Amanda Shell)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Heart failure can be slowed and even reversed by the use of <abbr title=\"transient receptor potential cation channel subfamily V member 1\">TRPV1<\/abbr>, a &ldquo;cannabinoid receptor&rdquo; that binds and reacts to components of marijuana, according to research led by a team at the <a href=\"http:\/\/jabsom.hawaii.edu\/\">John A. Burns School of Medicine<\/a> (<abbr>JABSOM<\/abbr>) at the <a href=\"https:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/\">University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> at M&#257;noa<\/a>. <strong>Alexander Stokes<\/strong>, a <abbr>JABSOM<\/abbr> assistant professor in <a href=\"https:\/\/jabsom.hawaii.edu\/departments\/cmb\/\">cell and molecular biology<\/a>, said the potential medical benefits of using cannabis-based therapies for the treatment of heart disease are promising.<\/p>\n<p>The study highlights the involvement of <abbr>TRPV1<\/abbr>, which shows long-term effective reversal of heart failure with oral administration of the drugs. &ldquo;<abbr>TRPV1<\/abbr> has previously been most studied as a pain receptor,&rdquo; said Stokes. &ldquo;The receptors are abundant in the heart, and we are excited to show that if we inhibit its function with oral doses of drugs, we can reverse some effects of heart failure.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tandfonline.com\/doi\/full\/10.1080\/19336950.2018.1547611\">findings were detailed in the peer-reviewed journal <em>Channels<\/em><\/a>.
