  {"id":8774,"date":"2012-08-03T12:59:02","date_gmt":"2012-08-03T22:59:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/?p=8774"},"modified":"2021-03-19T11:05:31","modified_gmt":"2021-03-19T21:05:31","slug":"power-purchase-agreement-brings-solar-energy-to-coconut-island","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2012\/08\/03\/power-purchase-agreement-brings-solar-energy-to-coconut-island\/","title":{"rendered":"Power purchase agreement brings solar energy to Coconut Island"},"content":{"rendered":"<span class=\"span-reading-time rt-reading-time\" style=\"display: block;\"><span class=\"rt-label rt-prefix\">Reading time: <\/span> <span class=\"rt-time\"> 2<\/span> <span class=\"rt-label rt-postfix\">minutes<\/span><\/span><figure id=\"attachment_8807\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-8807\" style=\"width: 400px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/coconut-Island.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"228\" class=\"size-full wp-image-8807\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/coconut-Island.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/08\/coconut-Island-260x148.jpg 260w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-8807\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A series of photovoltaic systems are being installed on building rooftops at the <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Institute of Marine Biology on Coconut Island.&#8221;<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>A power purchase agreement recently signed between the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.manoa.hawaii.edu\">University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> at M&#257;noa<\/a> and San Mateo, California-based solar energy company <a href=\"http:\/\/www.solarcity.com\">SolarCity<\/a> will provide renewable solar energy to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/HIMB\/\"><span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Institute of Marine Biology<\/a> on Coconut Island for the next 20 years.<\/p>\n<p>One of the first of its kind in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>, the agreement is expected to provide as much as $2.3 million in energy cost savings to the university over the life of the contract.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;This landmark achievement is a model for how we will proceed in the future,&rdquo; said <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M&#257;noa Chancellor <strong>Tom Apple<\/strong>. &ldquo;We have the unique opportunity to draw on the wealth of expertise on our campus, as well as our partners throughout the state, to set an example on what can be done to achieve significant energy savings. We&#8217;re making progress toward our goal of having 25 percent of campus-wide energy use supplied by renewable sources by 2020.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>As part of the agreement, SolarCity has begun to install, and will own and maintain, a series of photovoltaic systems on the rooftops of buildings on Coconut Island to provide solar-generated electricity at a discount to utility rates.<\/p>\n<p><abbr>UH<\/abbr> M&#257;noa will pay nothing up front and benefit from locking in a below-market electricity rate, significantly easing budgeting uncertainties from fluctuating electricity rates.<\/p>\n<p>The system will consist of solar panels and will have approximately 260 kilowatts (kW) of generation capacity, sufficient to provide an estimated 25 percent of the energy needs of the <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Institute of Marine Biology. This percentage is expected to increase as the institute&#8217;s infrastructure undergoes efficiency retrofits and energy conservation measures are introduced.<\/p>\n<p>The university&#8217;s participation was enabled by financial support from the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.soest.hawaii.edu\/csf\/csf_home.html\">Center for a Sustainable Future<\/a>, a non-profit funded by the Edwin W. Pauley Foundation and the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.castlefoundation.org\/\">Harold K.L.
