Photo: Angelica Covington.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p> Editor\u2019s Note (January 10, 2019): The East <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Master Gardeners has extended the deadline for applications for the 2019 Master Gardener Volunteer Training Program until January 20.<\/p>\n<p>Anyone with an interest in becoming a resource for home and school gardeners can apply to become a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ctahr.hawaii.edu\/UHMG\/\">Master Gardener<\/a>. The East <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Master Gardeners are accepting applications for the 2019 Master Gardener Volunteer Training Program. Courses begin January 23, 2019, and run through April.<\/p>\n<p>Trained and advised by extension agents from the University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> at M\u0101noa <a href=\"https:\/\/cms.ctahr.hawaii.edu\/\">College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources<\/a>, East <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Master Gardener volunteers will be trained on various course topics including: <\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Basic botany<\/li>\n<li>Native Hawaiian plants<\/li>\n<li>Invasive plant species<\/li>\n<li>Tropical ornamental plants<\/li>\n<li>Plant nutrition<\/li>\n<li>Soil fertility and nutrient management<\/li>\n<li>Insect and plant disease management<\/li>\n<li>Plant propagation and pruning<\/li>\n<li>Fruit and vegetable crops<\/li>\n<li>Natural gardening<\/li>\n<li>Diagnosing plant health problem<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Upon completion of the program, East <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Master Gardeners can provide their knowledge at &ldquo;plant doctor&rdquo; booths or information helplines, help schools manage their educational gardens and educate students about the importance of plants, manage invasive pests like Little Fire Ants and other projects. The group is also starting work on a beekeeping initiative in collaboration with the Big Island Beekeepers Association.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/forms\/sq4nZKPGIZZmmmi62\">Those interested can apply online<\/a>. Fee for the course is $200. Applicants will be interviewed on January 9, 2019.
