The <a href=\"http:\/\/hawaiisymphonyorchestra.org\"><span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Symphony Orchestra<\/a> performed four concerts that brought together science education, art and music at the Neal S. Blaisdell concert hall October 31&#8211;November 1.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Working with children is a great way to go for training up the next generation of people who can have the toolsets and the passion to solve the really big problems like we\u2019re facing with endangered species in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii,\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½,<\/span>&rdquo; said <strong>Melissa Price<\/strong>, project co-coordinator and assistant professor of natural resources and environmental management at the <a href=\"https:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/\">University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> at M&#257;noa<\/a>.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2018\/05\/15\/symphony-of-the-hawaiian-birds\/\">Read more about the first Symphony of the Hawaiian Birds concert in May<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/manoa-symphony-hawaiian-birds-1-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-87146\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/manoa-symphony-hawaiian-birds-1-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/manoa-symphony-hawaiian-birds-1-630x353.jpg 630w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/manoa-symphony-hawaiian-birds-1.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The performances were the culmination of a multidisciplinary collaboration between faculty from the <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> M&#257;noa <a href=\"https:\/\/cms.ctahr.hawaii.edu\/nrem\/\">Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Management<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/music\/\">Music Department<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/coe.hawaii.edu\/\">College of Education<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uhwo.hawaii.edu\/\"><abbr>UH<\/abbr> West <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span><\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/windward.hawaii.edu\/\">Windward Community College<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/acmsystem.hawaii.edu\/\"><abbr>UH<\/abbr> Academy for Creative Media System<\/a> as well as the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bishopmuseum.org\/\">Bishop Museum<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/hawaiisymphonyorchestra.org\/\"><span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Symphony Orchestra<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;It\u2019s a project that brings together all these different kinds of arts and sciences to education all these kids about birds and also show them what new music, new art looks like,&rdquo; said <strong>Takuma Itoh<\/strong>, associate professor of music.<\/p>\n<p>Prior to the concert, the students grades 4&#8211;12 learned about Hawaiian bird biology, ecology and conservation efforts through a program developed by the <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M&#257;noa College of Education, and <abbr>UH<\/abbr> music education students went into classrooms to teach a hula and demonstrate instruments in preparation for the concert.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Students got to learn about the native species, specifically the native birds like the <span aria-label=\"iiwi,\">i&#699;iwi,<\/span> and their adaptations. They adapted to our trees and now they\u2019re going extinct,&rdquo; said <span aria-label=\"Waianae\">Wai&#699;anae<\/span> Intermediate School science teacher Brigitte Russo, whose class attended the concert. &ldquo;I just wanted to thank <abbr>UH<\/abbr> for giving us this opportunity. They gave us a free field trip, which a lot of students aren\u2019t able to get.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>The Symphony of the Hawaiian Birds will have its first public performance on November 14, 7 p.m. at the Blaisdell concert hall.
