The partners are the <a href=\"http:\/\/hsdc.hawaii.gov\/\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½ Strategic Development Corporation<\/a> (<abbr>HSDC<\/abbr>), <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/\">University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span><\/a>, <abbr>UH<\/abbr> Ventures, <abbr title=\"limited liability company\">LLC<\/abbr> and <a href=\"http:\/\/nelha.hawaii.gov\/\">Natural Energy Laboratory of Hawaii Authority<\/a> (<abbr>NELHA<\/abbr>).<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;The establishment of a <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> aquaculture accelerator and a related investment fund is an effort to demonstrate the state\u2019s commitment to developing <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>\u2019s commercial aquaculture industry and to focus entrepreneur and investor interest on <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> as a location for globally relevant aquaculture companies,&rdquo; said <abbr>HSDC<\/abbr> President Karl Fooks. &ldquo;The initiative will also be focused on attracting investor capital and a follow-on fund for aquaculture in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> to develop technical and intellectual property that can benefit a global industry.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>According to <abbr>UH<\/abbr> Vice President for Research and Innovation <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/leadership\/vassilis-syrmos\/\"><strong>Vassilis L. Syrmos<\/strong><\/a>, the initiative will provide proof-of-concept and commercialization services to start-ups in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>\u2019s aquaculture cluster. &ldquo;It is critical that we work together to promote innovation as a new economic growth engine that will spark new industry technologies, maintain our competitiveness and generate new high-wage job opportunities for our students,&rdquo; said Syrmos. &ldquo;The project will build upon our existing regional strengths in aquaculture research, including programs at <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa\u2019s College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources, <abbr>UH<\/abbr> Hilo\u2019s Pacific Aquaculture and Coastal Resources Center and the <abbr>UH<\/abbr> Sea Grant College Program, which have been focused on advancing long-term sustainable use and conservation of coastal areas worldwide through aquaculture and resource management for many years.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_86965\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-86965\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/system-aquaculture-accelerator-host-park-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"large aquaculture facility\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-86965\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/system-aquaculture-accelerator-host-park-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/system-aquaculture-accelerator-host-park-630x353.jpg 630w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/system-aquaculture-accelerator-host-park.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-86965\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A vast array of aquaculture companies at the <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Ocean Science and Technology Park showing shrimp broodstock farms, fish hatcheries, seahorse farm and algae ponds.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The partnership seeks to create a facility and program at <abbr>NELHA<\/abbr>, using the world-class facilities to attract entrepreneurs in startups, help them get into the market and find a commercial space for their project.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;We will continue to pursue strategic relationships such as this to allow <abbr>NELHA<\/abbr> to maintain its competitive advantage and make available to the global aquaculture community an asset found only in very few places around the world,&rdquo;
