They monitor the limu (algae) and invertebrate communities of the understudied rocky intertidal areas in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> and collect authentic data while improving their scientific skills and building their confidence and interest in science.<\/p>\n<p>The research program is under the direction of <abbr>CRDG<\/abbr> Assistant Specialist <strong>Joanna Philippoff<\/strong> and co-directed by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.leeward.hawaii.edu\/\">Leeward Community College<\/a> Place-Based Lab Manager <strong>Anuschka Faucci<\/strong>. &ldquo;This award will allow us to continue to immerse teachers and students statewide in the scientific process,&rdquo; Philippoff said. &ldquo;It will also allow us to support continuing <abbr>OPIHI<\/abbr> teachers as well as bring on a new cohort of novice <abbr>OPIHI<\/abbr> teachers.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>In <abbr>OPIHI<\/abbr>, educators, scientists and cultural practitioners form a supportive community engaged in understanding their local <span aria-label=\"ahupuaa\">ahupua&#699;a<\/span>.
