President <a href=\"http:\/\/www.u-ryukyu.ac.jp\/en\/mains\/aboutus\/message.php\">Hajime Oshiro<\/a> and his faculty colleagues from the University of the Ryukyus joined <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> leadership, administrators and faculty and <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Governor <a href=\"https:\/\/governor.hawaii.gov\/governors-bio\/\">David Ige<\/a> at an October 12 celebration to mark the occasion.<\/p>\n<p>When the agreement was signed in 1988, then <abbr>UH<\/abbr> President Albert Simone praised the cooperation and friendship between <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> and Okinawa, and spoke of students from Okinawa studying at <abbr>UH<\/abbr>, of <abbr>UH<\/abbr> faculty conducting research in Okinawa and of the promise of future collaborations and international exchanges. The first of its kind in the United States with a specific focus on Okinawa-related issues and research interests, the center developed Okinawa-related courses in history, languages, literature, Asian studies, anthropology, sociology, dance and music. When the center was established, the University of the Ryukyus honored <abbr>UH<\/abbr> with a pair of Shisa (traditional lion dog guardian) statues, which were installed at the <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M&#257;noa campus on Maile Way next to Hamilton Library.<\/p>\n<p>The 30-year collaboration produced a variety of research publications including the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uhpress.hawaii.edu\/title\/okinawan-english-wordbook\/\"><em>Okinawan-English Wordbook<\/em><\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uhpress.hawaii.edu\/title\/the-ryukyu-kingdom-cornerstone-of-east-asia\/\"><em>The Ryukyu Kingdom: Cornerstone of East Asia<\/em><\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uhpress.hawaii.edu\/title\/voices-from-okinawa-featuring-three-plays-by-jon-shirota\/\"><em>Voices from Okinawa: Featuring Three Plays by Jon Shirota<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>A robust exchange program was developed with student exchanges between the University of the Ryukyus and multiple <abbr>UH<\/abbr> campuses and graduate students training at each university.<\/p>\n<p>As part of the celebration, the universities held the 30th Anniversary of the University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\u2014University\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½\u2014University<\/span> of the Ryukyus Partnership symposium on October 13.
