(Credit: Harrison Togia)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Just a few miles away from the tourist lights of K&#299;hei, Maui, is a barren, windswept island devoid of top soil and riddled with unexploded ordnance. <span aria-label=\"Kahoolawe\">Kaho&#699;olawe<\/span>, with its complicated history, has much to teach about sustainability and resilience of an island and a community.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.socialsciences.hawaii.edu\/profile\/index.cfm?email=davianna@hawaii.edu\"><strong>Davianna <span aria-label=\"Pomaikai\">P&#333;maika&#699;i<\/span> McGregor<\/strong><\/a>, a <a href=\"https:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/\">University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> at M\u0101noa<\/a> professor of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.socialsciences.hawaii.edu\/departments\/index.cfm?subject=ES\">ethnic studies<\/a>, is leading a team of <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> faculty members organizing two workshops on <span aria-label=\"Kahoolawe\">Kaho&#699;olawe<\/span>, with the goals of enhancing faculty capacity to engage in the sustainability and resilience of island ecosystems, and integrating indigenous Hawaiian science into curriculum.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_85815\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-85815\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/Manoa-soest-kahoolawe-workshops-3h.jpg\" alt=\"people climbing up steep hill on Kahoolawe\" width=\"300\" height=\"351\" class=\"size-full wp-image-85815\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/Manoa-soest-kahoolawe-workshops-3h.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/Manoa-soest-kahoolawe-workshops-3h-256x300.jpg 256w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-85815\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Workshop team on <span aria-label=\"Kahoolawe\">Kaho&#699;olawe<\/span>. (Credit: Sarah Wiebe)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&ldquo;The island is both a symbol of abuse and neglect of an island ecosystem and of the determination of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>&#8216;s people to protect our precious islands,&rdquo; said McGregor.<\/p>\n<p>The focus of the first workshop, held in late summer, was to envision and design research projects to support the sustainability and resilience of island ecosystems that can be piloted on the island. Twenty <abbr>UH<\/abbr> faculty members and several stewards of <span aria-label=\"Kahoolawe\">Kaho&#699;olawe<\/span> discussed and strategized about management challenges, energy and water sustainability, as well as ocean, wetland and land restoration efforts.<\/p>\n<p>The second workshop, scheduled for March 2019, will feature Kalei Nuuhiwa, specialist in traditional Native Hawaiian science from the Edith <span aria-label=\"Kanakaole\">Kanaka&#699;ole<\/span> Foundation. She will share examples of and facilitate sessions on how to design and integrate indigenous Hawaiian science into curriculum offered by various departments at <abbr>UH<\/abbr>.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;These workshops offer unique professional development opportunities for faculty and create opportunities for building relationships and collaboration from diverse fields across the university,&rdquo; said <a href=\"http:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/durp\/makena-coffman\/\"><strong>Makena Coffman<\/strong><\/a>, director of the new <a href=\"http:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/isr\/\"><abbr>UH<\/abbr> M&#257;noa Institute for Sustainability and Resilience<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>An island rich in history and culture<\/h2>\n<p><span aria-label=\"Kahoolawe\">Kaho&#699;olawe<\/span> is a historically and culturally rich training ground. Originally, the island was a center for observing the seasonal and daily movements of the sun, stars and moon, and for training navigators in wayfinding.<\/p>\n<p>It was degraded by goat, sheep and cattle ranching and live fire military training exercises in the 19th and 20th centuries. Beginning in 1976, the Native Hawaiian community rallied under the call of aloha <span aria-label=\"aina\">&#699;&#257;ina<\/span> to stop military use of <span aria-label=\"Kahoolawe.\">Kaho&#699;olawe.<\/span> That came true in October 1990.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;We hope to create a lasting momentum toward engaging in sustainability and resilience problems from a perspective that is more grounded in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>&#8216;s people and places,\u201d said team member <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cee.hawaii.edu\/faculty-staff-main\/2-faculty\/francis\/\"><strong>Oceana Francis<\/strong><\/a>, associate professor of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cee.hawaii.edu\/\">civil and environmental engineering<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Other <abbr>UH<\/abbr> team members include <a href=\"http:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/hshk\/the-school\/people\/kawaihuelani\/christopher-kaliko-baker\/\"><strong>C.
