  {"id":85470,"date":"2018-10-02T13:14:53","date_gmt":"2018-10-02T23:14:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/?p=85470"},"modified":"2020-03-13T12:46:34","modified_gmt":"2020-03-13T22:46:34","slug":"kahuawaiola-accreditation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2018\/10\/02\/kahuawaiola-accreditation\/","title":{"rendered":"<abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> Hilo indigenous teacher education program receives accreditation"},"content":{"rendered":"<span class=\"span-reading-time rt-reading-time\" style=\"display: block;\"><span class=\"rt-label rt-prefix\">Reading time: <\/span> <span class=\"rt-time\"> &lt; 1<\/span> <span class=\"rt-label rt-postfix\">minute<\/span><\/span><figure id=\"attachment_85468\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-85468\" style=\"width: 676px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/hilo-indigenous-teacher-program-accreditation.jpg\" alt=\"Group smiling in Norway\" width=\"676\" height=\"381\" class=\"size-full wp-image-85468\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/hilo-indigenous-teacher-program-accreditation.jpg 676w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/hilo-indigenous-teacher-program-accreditation-300x169.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 676px) 100vw, 676px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-85468\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><abbr>UH<\/abbr> Hilo group at Sami University of Applied Sciences, Norway.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/hilo.hawaii.edu\/catalog\/kahuawaiola-indigenous-teacher-education-program\">Kahuawaiola Indigenous Teacher Education Program<\/a> at the <a href=\"https:\/\/hilo.hawaii.edu\/\">University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> at Hilo<\/a> is the first teacher education program in the world to receive accreditation from the <a href=\"http:\/\/winhec.org\/\">World Indigenous Nations Higher Education Consortium<\/a> (<abbr title=\"World Indigenous Nations Higher Education Consortium\">WINHEC<\/abbr>).<\/p>\n<p><abbr>WINHEC<\/abbr> congratulated Kahuawaiola for its &ldquo;commitment to elevate high standards of indigenous teacher education as an exemplar example for all Indigenous peoples.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>The accreditation is valid for 10 years and the indigenous education consortium has also renewed accreditation for <abbr>UH<\/abbr> Hilo\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.olelo.hawaii.edu\/\">Ka Haka <span aria-label=\"Ula\">&#699;Ula<\/span> o <span aria-label=\"Keelikolani\">Ke&#699;elik\u014dlani<\/span> College of Hawaiian Language<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;[The teacher education program and Hawaiian language college accreditations] are important affirmations of the cultural and academic integrity of P&#8211;20 Hawaiian language medium education for our l\u0101hui <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>,&rdquo; said <strong>Makalapua Alencastre<\/strong>, associate professor and coordinator of the program. <\/p>\n<p>The <abbr>WINHEC<\/abbr> Board of Affirmation\/Accreditation met in Norway in August to consider applications and reports from potential candidates.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;We were so fortunate to have attended that meeting as we were afforded the time to present the Kahuawaiola program,&rdquo; said Alencastre.
