The Cash for College Challenge encourages high school seniors to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (<abbr>FAFSA<\/abbr>).<\/p>\n<p>More <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> public high schools are participating in this year\u2019s Cash for College Challenge, the <abbr>FAFSA<\/abbr> helps students identify available financial aid. The application is required when applying for federal student grants, work-study, loans and scholarships, including those offered by the state, schools and private organizations.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Each year, millions of free federal grants dollars are left unclaimed in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>,&rdquo; said <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> P&#8211;20 Executive Director <strong>Stephen Schatz<\/strong>. &ldquo;This aid could have helped more of our <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> students attend college. We need to do everything we can to help make college more affordable for students and families.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>The <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/tag\/hawaii-promise\/\"><span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Promise Scholarship<\/a>, which provides free in-state tuition dollars to fill the financial gap for qualified <abbr>UH<\/abbr> community college students with financial need, requires completion of <abbr>FAFSA<\/abbr>. Last year, this scholarship awarded over $1.7 million to approximately 1,500 <abbr>UH<\/abbr> community college students to help make college more affordable.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Related <em><abbr>UH<\/abbr> News<\/strong><\/em> story: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2018\/04\/08\/molokai-mckinley-fafsa-cash-for-college\/\"><span aria-label=\"Molokai\">Moloka&#699;i<\/span> and Mckinley High Schools win <abbr>FAFSA<\/abbr> &ldquo;Cash for College&rdquo; Challenge<\/a>, April 8, 2018<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Schools with the highest <abbr>FAFSA<\/abbr> completion rates and  largest increase in <abbr>FAFSA<\/abbr> completions over the previous year will be awarded cash prizes for their senior class to support high school graduation, prom and other end-of-year activities.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;We know that <abbr>FAFSA<\/abbr> completion rates translate to increased college enrollment, yet too many of our students are not taking advantage of this valuable resource. We want to ensure that every high school senior completes a <abbr>FAFSA<\/abbr>,&rdquo; said Department of Education Superintendent Christina Kishimoto. &ldquo;We\u2019ve set a goal to increase our statewide <abbr>FAFSA<\/abbr> completion rate to 70 percent and have raised that outcome goal to 90 percent for 2020&#8212;a challenging goal, but not an impossible one.
