  {"id":84948,"date":"2018-09-20T12:03:36","date_gmt":"2018-09-20T22:03:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/?p=84948"},"modified":"2019-04-09T15:11:59","modified_gmt":"2019-04-10T01:11:59","slug":"regents-approve-new-mkmb-members","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2018\/09\/20\/regents-approve-new-mkmb-members\/","title":{"rendered":"Regents approve six new Maunakea Management Board members"},"content":{"rendered":"<span class=\"span-reading-time rt-reading-time\" style=\"display: block;\"><span class=\"rt-label rt-prefix\">Reading time: <\/span> <span class=\"rt-time\"> 2<\/span> <span class=\"rt-label rt-postfix\">minutes<\/span><\/span><p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/system-maunakea-moon-2018.jpg\" alt=\"Summit of Maunakea and its shadow\" width=\"676\" height=\"381\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-84956\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/system-maunakea-moon-2018.jpg 676w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/system-maunakea-moon-2018-300x169.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 676px) 100vw, 676px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/offices\/bor\/\">Board of Regents<\/a> (<abbr>BOR<\/abbr>) today approved the appointments of six members of the community-based Maunakea Management Board (<abbr>MKMB<\/abbr>)&#8212;<strong>Roberta Chu, Julie Leialoha, Kep\u0101 Maly, Alapaki Nahale-a, Doug Simons<\/strong> and <strong>Barry Taniguchi<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The Mauna Kea Science Reserve Master Plan, approved by the <abbr>BOR<\/abbr> in June 2000, established <abbr>MKMB<\/abbr>, which is comprised of seven voting members representing the <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Island community. The <abbr>UH<\/abbr> Hilo chancellor submits his\/her recommendations for <abbr>MKMB<\/abbr> membership to the <abbr>BOR<\/abbr> for its consideration and approval. The two <abbr>BOR<\/abbr> members from <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Island also serve on the <abbr>MKMB<\/abbr> in a non-voting, ex-officio capacity. <abbr>MKMB<\/abbr>\u02bbs current chair is Greg Chun.<\/p>\n<h2>New <abbr>MKMB<\/abbr> member biographies<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Roberta Chu<\/strong> is a fifth-generation Hilo resident, graduate of Hilo High School and Mount Holyoke College in Massachusetts. She currently serves as senior vice president and manager of Bank of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>\u2019s <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Island Commercial Banking Center.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Julie Leialoha<\/strong> has an extensive career in natural resource management that began with an internship while attending high school at Kamehameha Schools in the mid-1970s. She currently serves as a program\/project coordinator for the <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Cooperative Studies Unit. She has served on multiple boards, including the Conservation Council for <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>, Papah\u0101naumoku\u0101kea Research Advisory Council, and Western Pacific Fisheries Management Council Native Hawaiian advisory group.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Kep\u0101 Maly<\/strong> is a Hilo resident who is principal of Kumu Pono Associates, <abbr>LLC<\/abbr>. He is a highly sought after and respected expert on historical and ethnographic studies who has served on many cultural heritage and natural resource management boards across the state.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Alapaki Nahale-a<\/strong> was born and raised in Hilo and is currently a senior director of regional strategies for Kamehameha Schools on <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Island. Prior to joining Kamehameha Schools, Nahale-a spent more than 20 years serving the community in a variety of roles including as the director and chairman of the Department of Hawaiian Home Lands Trust.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Doug Simons<\/strong> has been the executive director of the Canada-France-<span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Telescope on Maunakea since 2012. He is an astronomy veteran in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>, having spent most of his professional career either observing with or working for various Maunakea observatories. <\/p>\n<p><strong>Barry Taniguchi<\/strong> has been the president of <abbr>KTA<\/abbr> Super Stores since 1989 and has been its chairman and chief executive officer since 2014.
