As a result, <abbr>NINJAL<\/abbr> hosted its first international symposium, which reflected its reach and impact across the globe.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Approaches to Endangered Languages in Japan and Northeast Asia: Description, Documentation and Revitalization,&rdquo; was held in Tokyo in August, and included linguistics professors <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/ling.hawaii.edu\/william-ogrady\/\">William O\u2019Grady<\/a><\/strong> from <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa and <strong>Yumiko Ohara<\/strong> from <a href=\"https:\/\/hilo.hawaii.edu\/\"><abbr>UH<\/abbr> Hilo<\/a>, who served as keynote speakers. O\u2019Grady\u2019s address emphasized the importance of the role of linguists in language revitalization efforts. Ohara discussed the language revitalization and re-normalizing efforts of Hawaiian. <\/p>\n<p><abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/eall\/\">Department of East Asian Languages and Literatures<\/a> (<abbr>EALL<\/abbr>) Associate Professor <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/eall\/japanese-faculty\/shin-fukuda\/\"><strong>Shinichiro Fukuda<\/strong><\/a> told the symposium audience about the <abbr>UH<\/abbr> and <abbr>NINJAL<\/abbr> partnership publicly for the first time.<\/p>\n<p>The departments of <abbr>EALL<\/abbr> and linguistics are well matched for <abbr>NINJAL<\/abbr> priorities. <abbr>NINJAL<\/abbr> has documented various aspects of the Japanese language across regions and through the ages and today serves as an international locus of extensive studies on the languages of Japan.<\/p>\n<p>The Japanese section of the <abbr>EALL<\/abbr> is the largest in the nation, serving more than 1,000 students each semester, and specializes in language, linguistics and literature.
