(Credit: Chris Ostrander)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Beginning in fall 2018, <a href=\"https:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/\">University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> at M\u0101noa<\/a> students will be able to pursue a combined undergraduate and graduate degree in environmental planning in five years. Normally this combination would take at least six years to complete, so the opportunity allows students to save time and money.<\/p>\n<p>The pathway is a result of a collaboration between the Department of Oceanography in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.soest.hawaii.edu\/soestwp\/\">School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology<\/a> (<abbr title=\"School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology\">SOEST<\/abbr>) and the <a href=\"http:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/durp\/\">Department of Urban and Regional Planning<\/a> in the College of Social Sciences. It combines the bachelor of science in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.soest.hawaii.edu\/oceanography\/GES\/\">global environmental science<\/a> (<abbr>GES<\/abbr>) with the <a href=\"http:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/durp\/academics\/murp\/\">master in urban and regional planning<\/a> (<abbr>MURP<\/abbr>).<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;This is an amazing opportunity for <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa and <abbr>UH<\/abbr> community college students to get a bachelor in environmental science and a master in environmental planning in just five years,&rdquo; said <abbr>GES<\/abbr> Chair <strong>Michael Guidry<\/strong>. &ldquo;Students with this combination have the ability to go anywhere in the country and get a job.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>This degree is designed for students interested in the environment and how societies can plan urban development, taking into account environmental and climate change, in a sustainable way.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;The <abbr>GES<\/abbr> and <abbr>MURP<\/abbr> combined pathway program is not only giving me the opportunity to earn a master\u2019s degree in half the time it would normally take, but is also allowing me to use skills I have learned in the <abbr>GES<\/abbr> program in an exciting and unique field,&rdquo; said <strong><span aria-label=\"Noeau\">No&#699;eau<\/span> Machado<\/strong>, the first <abbr>GES<\/abbr> student accepted into the pathway. &ldquo;Having a <abbr>GES<\/abbr> degree as well as a <abbr>MURP<\/abbr> degree will also help me in pursuing my goals of working to better the natural environment of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Said Department of Urban and Regional Planning Chair <strong>Priyam Das<\/strong>, &ldquo;We are delighted to offer this opportunity for students to receive an accredited master\u2019s degree by building on the foundations of the <abbr>GES<\/abbr> program. <abbr>MURP<\/abbr> is a nationally accredited, highly ranked planning program.
