{"id":84743,"date":"2018-09-17T15:36:19","date_gmt":"2018-09-18T01:36:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/?p=84743"},"modified":"2019-04-05T16:49:28","modified_gmt":"2019-04-06T02:49:28","slug":"ethnically-diverse-cancer-study-25th-anniversary","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2018\/09\/17\/ethnically-diverse-cancer-study-25th-anniversary\/","title":{"rendered":"Most ethnically diverse cancer study celebrates 25th anniversary"},"content":{"rendered":"<span class=\"span-reading-time rt-reading-time\" style=\"display: block;\"><span class=\"rt-label rt-prefix\">Reading time: <\/span> <span class=\"rt-time\"> 2<\/span> <span class=\"rt-label rt-postfix\">minutes<\/span><\/span><div class=\"responsive-video-wrap\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"676\" height=\"380\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/7xSCW6Z1vko?rel=0&amp;showinfo=0\" title=\"YouTube video player\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<figure id=\"attachment_84747\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-84747\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/manoa-cancer-cenver-mec-study-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-84747\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/manoa-cancer-cenver-mec-study-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/manoa-cancer-cenver-mec-study-630x353.jpg 630w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/manoa-cancer-cenver-mec-study.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-84747\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Attendees at the <abbr>UH<\/abbr> Cancer Center Multiethnic Cohort Study celebration.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Hundreds of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> residents who participated in the largest cancer study of its kind attended an event to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.uhcancercenter.org\/research\/the-multiethnic-cohort-study-mec\">Multiethnic Cohort (<abbr>MEC<\/abbr>) Study<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Since 1993, participants have been sharing their health information with the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.uhcancercenter.org\/\">University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> Cancer Center<\/a> and the Keck School of Medicine at the University of Southern California in the most ethnically diverse epidemiologic study in the world.<\/p>\n<p>About 215,000 participants ages 45&#8211;75 in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> and California helped investigate the roles that lifestyle, diet and genetics play in cancer and other chronic diseases.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;The <abbr>MEC<\/abbr> Study is being conducted to understand the differences in risk that exist for cancer and other chronic diseases among the main ethnic\/racial groups living in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> and California,&rdquo; said <strong>Lo\u00efc Le Marchand<\/strong>, <abbr>UH<\/abbr> Cancer Center epidemiologist and principal investigator of the study.<\/p>\n<p>The event gave <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> participants a chance to learn about how their participation has become a trove for findings relating to cancer research. The <abbr>MEC<\/abbr> Study has resulted in more than 600 published scientific articles on topics including smoking, diet, alcohol, coffee, meat cooking methods, physical activity, hormones, reproductive factors, genetics, inflammation, infections, sleep, air pollution, gut microbes, obesity and diabetes.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;I feel like I\u02bbve done something to really contribute to finding a cure,&rdquo; study participant Leona Pereza said. &ldquo;I\u2019ve wanted to be part of this study for several reasons. In my family, my mother, my maternal grandmother and also my mother-in-law all were victims of breast cancer.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>The <abbr>MEC<\/abbr> Study has brought more than $150 million in federal research funding to <abbr>UH<\/abbr>. It has been funded since 1993 by the National Cancer Institute.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;We are proud to lead a study with such significant impact at the <abbr>UH<\/abbr> Cancer Center. The <abbr>MEC<\/abbr> study has gained national and international recognition among biomedical scientists, and is an example of the world-class research conducted at the University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span>,&rdquo; said <strong>Randall Holcombe<\/strong>, <abbr>UH<\/abbr> Cancer Center director.<\/p>\n<p>The participants completed a questionnaire on their lifestyle, medical history and habits.
