Four teams from <abbr>UH<\/abbr> community colleges competed in the event sponsored by Stella Artois, <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Food and Wine Festival and <span aria-label=\"Kauai\">Kaua&#699;i<\/span> Shrimp and held at the <abbr>UH<\/abbr> Culinary Institute of the Pacific (<abbr title=\"Culinary Institute of the Pacific\">CIP<\/abbr>) on Diamond Head.<\/p>\n<p>The <abbr>UH<\/abbr> teams from <span aria-label=\"Kapiolani\">Kapi&#699;olani<\/span> <abbr title=\"Community College\">CC<\/abbr>, <a href=\"http:\/\/kauai.hawaii.edu\/\"><span aria-label=\"Kauai\">Kaua&#699;i<\/span> <abbr>CC<\/abbr><\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/hawaii.hawaii.edu\/\"><span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> <abbr>CC<\/abbr> <\/a>Hilo and <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> <abbr>CC<\/abbr>&#8211;<a href=\"http:\/\/hawaii.hawaii.edu\/palamanui\/\">P\u0101lamanui<\/a> had to create a dish using <span aria-label=\"Kauai\">Kaua&#699;i<\/span> Shrimp that pairs perfectly with a Stella Artois beer. The entries were judged by Chef Alan Wong of Alan Wong\u2019s, Chef Roy Yamaguchi of Roy\u2019s Hawaii, Chef Keoni Chang of Foodland Super Market, Ross Baechle of Stella Artois and Paul Bienfang of <span aria-label=\"Kauai\">Kaua&#699;i<\/span> Shrimp.<\/p>\n<p>The winning dish&#8212;spiced grilled <span aria-label=\"Kauai\">Kaua&#699;i<\/span> shrimp, plantain, sauerkraut applesauce and Stella cheese sauce&#8212;was inspired by a German recipe said <span aria-label=\"Kapiolani\">Kapi&#699;olani<\/span> student chef <strong>Nohea Banner Martin<\/strong>, who partnered with fellow student <strong>Mychelle Coon<\/strong> to take the competition.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;It\u2019s exciting to see that all these chefs are here to try what we are making,&rdquo; said Martin referring to the famous judges. &ldquo;It means that they support what we are doing, so it\u2019s nice.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>The celebrity judges were just one element of the competition. The <abbr>CIP<\/abbr> kitchen was packed with student chefs, judges and other guests who were able to enjoy the dishes as soon as they were prepared and plated before their eyes.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;I would say it\u2019s a little stressful, but it\u2019s also very satisfying to be able to see right away their face, while trying it,&rdquo; said Martin. &ldquo;I think it is a really cool concept.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Wong, a graduate of the <span aria-label=\"Kapiolani\">Kapi&#699;olani<\/span> <abbr>CC<\/abbr> culinary program, says competition is a great experience for the students.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;All the culinary schools get their students together and compete, they\u2019re like striving,&rdquo; said Wong. &ldquo;I think that\u2019s the most important thing. The bonus is the food taste great!&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p><span aria-label=\"Kapiolani\">Kapi&#699;olani<\/span> <abbr>CC<\/abbr> Chef Instructor <strong>Jason Peel<\/strong>, the instructor for the winning team, helped organize the competition. He says his goal is to get all of the <abbr>UH<\/abbr> culinary programs to compete.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;The biggest thing I want to see is getting the state together, getting the schools and start building this camaraderie,&rdquo; said Peel.<\/p>\n<p>The team from <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> <abbr>CC<\/abbr>&#8211;P\u0101lamanui, <strong>Lily Frazier <\/strong>and <strong>Thomas Elcarco<\/strong>, won the fan\u2019s choice award and $500 each from Stella Artois. Their chef instructor is <strong>Paul Heerlein<\/strong>. The competitors from <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> <abbr>CC<\/abbr> Hilo were student chefs <strong>Sachie Oshima<\/strong> and <strong>Jomar Oli<\/strong> with Chef Instructor <strong>Brian Hirata<\/strong>.
