Be a teacher.&rdquo; is a media campaign designed to inspire high school and college students and working professionals to consider a career in education by highlighting the benefits and rewards of being a teacher. Consisting of a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=eQ_K2LatZmc&#038;feature=youtu.be\">30 second Public Service Announcement version<\/a>, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=n8N5rj_ZXdY\">two-and-a-half minute slam poetry video<\/a>&#8212;written and performed by a teacher&#8212;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.beaherobeateacher.com\/\">and a website<\/a>, the campaign is among a number of steps being taken by <abbr>UH<\/abbr> and <abbr>HIDOE<\/abbr> to address the state\u2019s teacher shortage. The shortage has grown from 300-plus vacancies statewide in 2013, to more than 550 in fall 2018.<\/p>\n<p>Central to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.beaherobeateacher.com\">&ldquo;Be a hero. Be a teacher.&rdquo;<\/a> is a web portal that helps students explore various teacher credentialing options available at four <abbr>UH<\/abbr> campuses&#8212;<a href=\"http:\/\/info.coe.hawaii.edu\/teacher-licensure\"><abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa<\/a>, <abbr>UH<\/abbr> Hilo (<a href=\"https:\/\/hilo.hawaii.edu\/depts\/education\/\">School of Education<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.olelo.hawaii.edu\/kwo\/\">Kahuawaiola Teacher Education Program<\/a>), <a href=\"https:\/\/westoahu.hawaii.edu\/academics\/#degrees\"><abbr>UH<\/abbr> West <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span><\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/teach.leeward.hawaii.edu\/\">Leeward Community College<\/a>. These campuses participated in the development of the campaign, which was produced by Kai Media and coordinated by the <abbr>UH<\/abbr> Office of Academic Planning and Policy.<\/p>\n<p>Set to run through March 2019, the <abbr>HNN<\/abbr> advertisement campaign will culminate with a &ldquo;My Teacher is a Hero&rdquo; Facebook contest. It also includes segments on HINow, which airs during the morning on <abbr>HNN<\/abbr>. The first HINow segment featured <abbr>UH<\/abbr> President <strong>David Lassner<\/strong> and <abbr>HIDOE<\/abbr> Superintendent Christina Kishimoto discussing the teacher shortage and the &ldquo;Be a hero.
