  {"id":8396,"date":"2012-07-20T10:53:21","date_gmt":"2012-07-20T20:53:21","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/?p=8396"},"modified":"2023-03-15T14:06:18","modified_gmt":"2023-03-16T00:06:18","slug":"uh-recognizes-hawaiis-brightest","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2012\/07\/20\/uh-recognizes-hawaiis-brightest\/","title":{"rendered":"<abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> recognizes <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai\u02bbi<\/span>\u2019s brightest"},"content":{"rendered":"<span class=\"span-reading-time rt-reading-time\" style=\"display: block;\"><span class=\"rt-label rt-prefix\">Reading time: <\/span> <span class=\"rt-time\"> 2<\/span> <span class=\"rt-label rt-postfix\">minutes<\/span><\/span><p>The 2012 University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai\u02bbi<\/span> Regent Scholars and Presidential Scholars have big plans.<\/p>\n<p>Presidential Scholar and <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa student Tyler Blair says he will first complete his bachelor of science degree in chemistry. \u201cI plan on continuing on to getting my PhD in chemistry and possibly becoming a professor,\u201d said Blair.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m going to be majoring in Hawaiian studies and also doubling in psychology probably,\u201d said Regents Scholar Britny Ching, who just graduated from Sacred Hearts Academy.<\/p>\n<p>Presidential Scholar and <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa student Dane Kurohara plans to go to premed. \u201cAnd go to medical school one day and hopefully become a doctor,\u201d said Kurohara. \u201cThen I\u2019ll come home to <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai\u02bbi<\/span> and move back to Maui,\u201d said Kurohara.<\/p>\n<p>The scholarship program is an effort to keep state\u2019s best and brightest in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai\u02bbi<\/span>. More than 300 students submitted applications and the 30 who were selected were recently honored at an awards banquet.<\/p>\n<p>The 20 Regents Scholars are incoming freshman who just graduated from <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai\u02bbi<\/span> high schools. To apply, they had to have a minimum 1950 on all three sections of their SATs, a 3.5 grade-point-average and an impressive list of extracurricular activities. Each will receive a full tuition scholarship for four years, $4,000 a year and a one-time $2,000 travel grant.<\/p>\n<p>Wai\u0101kea graduate and 2012 Regents Scholar Lauren Hill plans on majoring in chemistry. \u201cIt\u2019s a really great honor to have been selected,\u201d said Hill. \u201cIt means that I get to go to <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa, which I consider to be a really good school and get a good education for an affordable rate for my family.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Presidential Scholarships are awarded to 10 incoming college juniors in the <abbr>UH<\/abbr> system with a 3.7 grade-point-average and a record of substantial academic progress and superior achievement.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI remember having to take my first loan this past year and to have that financial stability over the next two years, it means a ton to both me and my family,\u201d said Blair.<\/p>\n<p>The fact these students are in the <abbr>UH<\/abbr> system means a great deal to the university, according to <abbr>UH<\/abbr> President M.R.C.
