In the 2018 ranking, <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa stayed in the 70&#8211;95 range in the U.S., and in the 201&#8211;300 range in the world.<\/p>\n<p>Compiled every year since 2003, the <abbr>ARWU<\/abbr> ranking uses six weighted indicators to determine an institution\u2019s academic and research performance, including Nobel Prizes and Fields Medals; highly cited researchers; papers published in <em>Nature<\/em> and <em>Science<\/em>; papers cited in major citation indices; and the per capita performance of each institution.<\/p>\n<p><abbr>ARWU<\/abbr> ranks universities based on objective indicators and third-party data, and is considered one of the most reliable ranking systems to observe the academic performance of world research universities.<\/p>\n<p>On top of the overall ranking, <abbr>ARWU<\/abbr> also rates the subject areas at each campus internationally.<\/p>\n<h2>Natural sciences<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Oceanography: <strong>8<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Atmospheric science: <strong>30<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Earth sciences: <strong>51&#8211;75<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Ecology: <strong>151&#8211;200<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Life sciences<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Agricultural sciences: <strong>401&#8211;500<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Social sciences<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Communication: <strong>76&#8211;100<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Hospitality and tourism management: <strong>76&#8211;100<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Education: <strong>101&#8211;150<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Public administration: <strong>151&#8211;200<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Political sciences: <strong>201&#8211;300<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Psychology: <strong>301&#8211;400<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Management: <strong>301&#8211;400<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Engineering<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Environmental science and engineering: <strong>301&#8211;400<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Energy science and engineering: <strong>401&#8211;500<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&ldquo;These rankings reflect the stellar achievements of our faculty and our alumni, and affirm the international stature of the university.
