Marcus Eriksen<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Marcus Eriksen, a leading researcher in documenting marine plastic pollution around the world, will be featured at the University of Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> at M\u0101noa\u2019s Better Tomorrow Speaker Series<\/a>. The Junk Raft<\/em> talk, film screening and book signing by Eriksen<\/a>, co-founder of 5Gyres.org<\/a>, will be at The Royal Hawaiian Hotel\u2019s Monarch Ballroom on Wednesday, August 29 at 7:30 p.m.<\/p>\n

Marking the 10-year anniversary of the Junk Raft\u2019s landing in Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span>, Eriksen\u2019s book and documentary captures his 88 days at sea with co-navigator Joel Paschal, as they sailed from California to Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> on a raft made of 15,000 plastic bottles. The purpose of the 2,600-mile voyage was to build public awareness about the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, the global issue of marine plastic pollution and the growing movement to reduce single-use plastics in Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> and around the world.<\/p>\n

“When Marcus completed his voyage on the Junk Raft in 2008, he became known as an intrepid eco-adventurer who helped publicize the Garbage Patch and the issue of marine plastic pollution,” says Stuart Coleman, Surfrider\u2019s manager and co-founder of BooksAndSpirits.com, one of the event sponsors. “In the 10 years since that epic voyage, he has become one of the leaders of the international plastic pollution movement. So we are thrilled to have him back in Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> for the 10th anniversary of that voyage.”<\/p>\n

The event is free and open to the public but registration is required<\/a>. A cash bar, light pupu and copies of Eriksen\u2019s book Junk Raft<\/em> will be available purchase.<\/p>\n
