It\u2019s the right thing to do for future generations,&rdquo; said <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/leadership\/david-lassner\/\"><strong>David Lassner<\/strong><\/a>, <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa interim chancellor.<\/p>\n<p>M\u0101noa campus has a base load of approximately 10<abbr>MW<\/abbr> and a peak load of about 20<abbr>MW<\/abbr>, which is the energy consumption equivalent of around 10,000 to 20,000 residential homes. An estimated 60 percent of the campus\u2019 energy is consumed by precision Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning (<abbr>HVAC<\/abbr>) systems to support research activities.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_83250\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-83250\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/system-pv-parking-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/system-pv-parking-1-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-83250\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/system-pv-parking-1-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/system-pv-parking-1-630x353.jpg 630w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/system-pv-parking-1.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-83250\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photovoltaic parking structure rendering.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&ldquo;The design team was able to maximize the number of solar panels with absolutely no reduction in the total number of parking stalls,&rdquo; said <strong>Blake Araki<\/strong>, <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa director of operations and facilities. &ldquo;These <abbr>PV<\/abbr> projects, coupled with deep efficiency retrofits including <abbr title=\"light-emitting diode\">LED<\/abbr> conversions, <abbr>HVAC<\/abbr> system modernizations, and optimizing space utilization will help the university to both reduce its electricity costs and create 21st century facilities for our students.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>The <abbr>PV<\/abbr> systems were procured using a power purchase agreement, which allows the campus to pay for the design and construction of clean energy projects through anticipated energy cost savings.
