Burns School of Medicine<\/a>\u2019s (<abbr>JABSOM<\/abbr>) White Coat Ceremony when proud parents, doctors, faculty and community members officially welcomed them into the study of medicine.<\/p>\n<p>The newest students accepted into the <a href=\"https:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/\">University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> at M\u0101noa<\/a> medical school include a Fulbright Fellow, a Miss <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Teen <abbr>USA<\/abbr>, a black belt in judo who has represented the U.S. in international tournaments, a former <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa Wahine volleyball player, and a <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa Chancellor\u2019s Scholar.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_82511\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-82511\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/manoa-jabsom-white-coat-2018-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"Students wearing their white coats\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-82511\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/manoa-jabsom-white-coat-2018-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/manoa-jabsom-white-coat-2018-630x353.jpg 630w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/manoa-jabsom-white-coat-2018.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-82511\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Class of 2022<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The <abbr>JABSOM<\/abbr> <span aria-label=\"ohana\">&#699;ohana<\/span> includes parents, along with a host of teachers, coaches, community leaders and others who have helped the 72 students&#8212;accepted from among 2050 applicants&#8212;achieve the opportunity to study medicine.<\/p>\n<p>When asked what he was feeling just moments before his daughter, <strong>Clare-Marie Anderson<\/strong>, was presented with her white coat Jay Anderson grew emotional thinking of all the others who helped support his daughter and their family.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;It takes a lot. It takes the community and a village to get kids through school these days,&rdquo; said Anderson, who said that his family moved from <span aria-label=\"Molokai\">Moloka&#699;i<\/span> to <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span> so that Clare-Marie could attend Punahou School to help prepare her for medical school.<\/p>\n<p>He also thought of the contributions his daughter made, by working hard as a student, and as a student-athlete. Clare-Marie was a member of the <abbr>UH<\/abbr> Wahine volleyball team. When she was accepted into <abbr>JABSOM<\/abbr>, her hard work paid off, and she was rewarded with a full four-year merit scholarship.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;She was awarded a scholarship from John Burns (School of Medicine), which was wonderful, because&#8212;as it\u2019s been for most families here I would imagine&#8212;it\u2019s been a financial challenge to get this far.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Also expressing a mix of pride and gratitude was the mother of <strong>Billie Ryman Ocampo<\/strong>, a member of the <abbr>JABSOM<\/abbr> Class of 2022 from the Pacific Island of Saipan.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;I just want to say a shout out to everyone in Saipan, to to all our family and a big congratulations to my son Billie,&rdquo; said Maria Pensader. &ldquo;We\u2019re very happy for (<abbr>JABSOM<\/abbr>) to give my son a chance to study here, yes.
