  {"id":82086,"date":"2018-07-17T02:03:21","date_gmt":"2018-07-17T12:03:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/?p=82086"},"modified":"2020-01-13T14:17:55","modified_gmt":"2020-01-14T00:17:55","slug":"rainbow-warrior-racing","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2018\/07\/17\/rainbow-warrior-racing\/","title":{"rendered":"Rainbow Warrior Racing team tops in international competition"},"content":{"rendered":"<span class=\"span-reading-time rt-reading-time\" style=\"display: block;\"><span class=\"rt-label rt-prefix\">Reading time: <\/span> <span class=\"rt-time\"> 2<\/span> <span class=\"rt-label rt-postfix\">minutes<\/span><\/span><div class=\"responsive-video-wrap\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"676\" height=\"380\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/OM3U8qoGExQ?rel=0&amp;showinfo=0\" title=\"YouTube video player\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/rip.eng.hawaii.edu\/projects\/sae-formula-2017-2018\/#tab-1\">Rainbow Warrior Racing<\/a> team in the University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> at M\u0101noa\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eng.hawaii.edu\/\">College of Engineering<\/a> earned high honors at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sae.org\/attend\/student-events\">2018 International Formula <abbr>SAE<\/abbr><\/a> (Society of Automotive Engineers) Collegiate Design Competition held in Lincoln, Nebraska.<\/p>\n<p>The team competed with students from universities representing the U.S., Canada and Mexico to design, build and compete a formula-style race car by using classroom theories and applying them in a real-life project. Gov. David Ige, an alumnus of the college, recognized the team for their achievements at a proclamation ceremony at the <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> State Capitol in July.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_82116\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-82116\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/manoa-engineering-rainbow-warrior-racing.jpg\" alt=\"Rainbow Warrior Racing team with car\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" class=\"size-full wp-image-82116\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/manoa-engineering-rainbow-warrior-racing.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/manoa-engineering-rainbow-warrior-racing-130x130.jpg 130w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-82116\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Rainbow Warrior Racing team<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Out of more than 115 universities that qualified to compete at the championships, The Rainbow Warrior Racing team received a national ranking of:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>2nd in efficiency<\/li>\n<li>10th for business presentation<\/li>\n<li>14th overall (up from 63rd place in 2017)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>They competed in eight different trials such as skid pad, acceleration and autocross. <abbr>UH<\/abbr> was one of only eight universities to finish in all mandatory trials. The 2018 Formula <abbr title=\"Society of Automotive Engineers\">SAE<\/abbr> competition was the fifth consecutive contest for the <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> team.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;These types of recognitions gives us a little bit of a step forward in trying to get more people to understand the importance of engineering, science, mathematics, higher education, the University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> and everything else that goes on in this island,&rdquo; said <strong>Song Choi<\/strong>, assistant dean in the College of Engineering.<\/p>\n<p>The Rainbow Warrior Racing team was founded in 2004 under Choi to promote and provide opportunities for students to explore <abbr>STEM<\/abbr> (science, technology, engineering, mathematics)-based careers in automotive and mechanical engineering. It functions as both a student club and a capstone project for mechanical engineering students.<\/p>\n<p>Unlike other universities that participated in the Formula <abbr>SAE<\/abbr> competition, the <abbr>UH<\/abbr> team does not have access to a racetrack facility and achieved their national ranking by training in a parking lot. To help improve  the team\u2019s chances in the competition, the College of Engineering needs a practice track to use for testing.
