  {"id":818,"date":"2011-10-15T03:24:05","date_gmt":"2011-10-15T03:24:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/?p=818"},"modified":"2021-06-07T15:39:39","modified_gmt":"2021-06-08T01:39:39","slug":"manager-of-the-year","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2011\/10\/15\/manager-of-the-year\/","title":{"rendered":"State Manager of the Year for 2011 is <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> executive"},"content":{"rendered":"<span class=\"span-reading-time rt-reading-time\" style=\"display: block;\"><span class=\"rt-label rt-prefix\">Reading time: <\/span> <span class=\"rt-time\"> &lt; 1<\/span> <span class=\"rt-label rt-postfix\">minute<\/span><\/span><figure id=\"attachment_821\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-821\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/hokoana-f.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"224\" class=\"size-full wp-image-821\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-821\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Hokoana with Windward Chancellor Doug Dykstra<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Associate Vice President for Student Affairs <strong>Lui Hokoana<\/strong> was named State of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Manager of the Year during a ceremony Friday at the State Capitol Auditorium.<\/p>\n<p>The award honors the state executive branch manager who exemplifies the highest caliber of public service and dedication to serving the people of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>As vice chancellor for student affairs at Windward Community College, Lui focused on student recruitment and community outreach, accessed grants for faculty and staff development, created a mentoring program and promoted academic support strategies to improve student achievement.<\/p>\n<p>Hokoana joined the <abbr>UH<\/abbr> System Office of Student Affairs in May. He continues to strengthen educational opportunities for <abbr>UH<\/abbr> students and the community and develop and coordinate systemwide student affairs policies and procedures.<\/p>\n<p>Hokoana is described as a charming man who exudes goodwill, a sincere interest in the well-being of students and commitment to support faculty and staff. &ldquo;Lui is an experienced and seasoned leader who is attuned to community needs, especially as they relate to Hawaiian affairs,&rdquo; noted <strong>Rockne Freitas<\/strong>, <abbbr>Âé¶¹´«Ã½vice president for student affairs and university and community relations.<\/abbbr><\/p>\n<p>Hokoana began his <abbr>UH<\/abbr> career as a counselor at <abbr>UH<\/abbr> Maui College in 1991. He served as director of the Liko <span aria-label=\"ae\">A&#699;e<\/span> Native Hawaiian Scholarship Program, which he developed and implemented to provide scholarships to students throughout the United States, and he is a founder and past president of the Native Hawaiian Education Association.
