(Credit: <abbr title=\"School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology\">SOEST<\/abbr> Maile Mentoring)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.soest.hawaii.edu\/oceanography\/faculty\/Alegado.html\"><strong>Rosie Alegado<\/strong><\/a>, assistant professor in <abbr>SOEST<\/abbr>&#8216;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.soest.hawaii.edu\/oceanography\/\">Department of Oceanography<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/seagrant.soest.hawaii.edu\/\"><abbr>UH<\/abbr> Sea Grant<\/a> program, invited two traditional <span aria-label=\"ohe\">&#699;ohe<\/span> k\u0101pala practitioners from H\u014dnaunau on <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Island, Uncle George Place and <abbr>UH<\/abbr> Sea Grant&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/seagrant.soest.hawaii.edu\/directory-detail\/?smid=33416\"><strong>Chantal Chung<\/strong><\/a>, to lead the first <abbr>SOEST<\/abbr> Hana <span aria-label=\"Noeau\">No&#699;eau<\/span> Workshop in May.<\/p>\n<p>During traditional graduation ceremonies for the ancient arts, students who have acquired sufficient skill and knowledge to advance to the next level of training are presented with k\u012bhei by their teachers. K\u012bhei are traditional Hawaiian garments worn during ceremony and protocol, often adorned with symbols representing the expertise of the wearer.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;The <abbr>SOEST<\/abbr> Maile Mentoring Bridge program seeks to create nurturing spaces for <span aria-label=\"kama\u0101ina\">kama&#699;\u0101ina<\/span> (local) students pursuing geoscience degrees at <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa,&rdquo; said Alegado. &ldquo;A critical component in our students&#8217; educational journey is contextualizing their science in the framework of our host culture.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<h2>Representing the journey<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_81740\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-81740\" style=\"width: 676px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/manoa-soest-kihei-graduates.jpg\" alt=\"3 graduating student at commencement wearing their kihei\" width=\"676\" height=\"381\" class=\"size-full wp-image-81740\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/manoa-soest-kihei-graduates.jpg 676w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/manoa-soest-kihei-graduates-300x169.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 676px) 100vw, 676px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-81740\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><abbr>SOEST<\/abbr> graduates with kihei. (Credit: <abbr title=\"School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology\">SOEST<\/abbr> Maile Mentoring)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The Maile students learned how to design and carve symbols representing their science and academic journey on traditional bamboo stamps or <span aria-label=\"ohe\">&#699;ohe<\/span> k\u0101pala. They were then stamped on k\u012bhei made of undyed muslin, reminiscent of kapa or paper mulberry cloth.
