Journalism majors in the University of Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> at Ma\u0304noa\u2019s College of Social Sciences<\/a> swept the student category in this year\u2019s statewide Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ<\/abbr>) Excellence in Journalism competition, earning first-place awards in all six categories.<\/p>\n

As the field of journalism has been under attack nationally—both via political rhetoric and actual physical attacks and threats—UH<\/abbr> Ma\u0304noa journalism students in the School of Communications<\/a> have been ambitiously creating new digital media channels for the community.<\/p>\n

These channels include Hoʻa Oʻahu, an independent student news website advised by Associate Professor Brett Oppegaard<\/strong><\/a>, and UHMtv<\/abbr><\/a>, a 30-minute video news magazine featured on KFVE that is overseen by Associate Professor Gerald Kato<\/strong><\/a> and instructors Bernadette Baraquio<\/strong><\/a> and Sherrie White<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n
