(Credit: Shaneika Aguilar)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>A cohort of 10 motivated undergraduate students arrived at the <a href=\"https:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/\">University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> at M\u0101noa<\/a> in June to participate in a summer research internship, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.soest.hawaii.edu\/EarthScience-reu\/\">Earth Science on Volcanic Islands<\/a>, hosted by the <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa <a href=\"http:\/\/www.soest.hawaii.edu\/GG\/\">Department of Geology and Geophysics<\/a>. The opportunity, funded for three years by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nsf.gov\/funding\/pgm_summ.jsp?pims_id=5517\">National Science Foundation&#8217;s Research Experience for Undergraduates<\/a> (<abbr>REU<\/abbr>) program, seeks to increase participation in the <abbr title=\"science technology engineering and math\">STEM<\/abbr> (science, technology, engineering and math) workforce by underrepresented groups.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;In practice, what this means is we find highly qualified students for whom participation in this program will have the biggest impact,&rdquo; said <a href=\"http:\/\/www.soest.hawaii.edu\/wessel\/\"><strong>Paul Wessel<\/strong><\/a>, director of the program and chair of geology and geophysics in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.soest.hawaii.edu\/soestwp\/\">School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology<\/a>. &ldquo;After sorting through over 350 applicants, we are very pleased with this year&#8217;s cohort; it is a great group.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<h2>Hands-on experiences: In the lab, in the field<\/h2>\n<p>Students are assigned to work with faculty throughout the school&#8212;with mentors from the geology and geophysics and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.soest.hawaii.edu\/oceanography\/\">oceanography<\/a> departments as well as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.higp.hawaii.edu\/\"><span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Institute of Geophysics and Planetology<\/a>&#8212;for nine weeks. The internship program takes advantage of the unique tropical volcanic island and surrounding marine environments in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>, which are found nowhere else in the country.<\/p>\n<p>Participants will conduct a wide range of original research, including studies of active and inactive Hawaiian volcanoes, environmental science in tropical watersheds and coastal environments, effect of groundwater discharge on corals, mapping and modeling of Earth processes and much more.<\/p>\n<p>Led by geology faculty, the cohort began the program with a two-day field trip to <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Island. (Credit: <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa <abbr title=\"School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology\">SOEST<\/abbr>)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2>A history of success<\/h2>\n<p>Wessel was a mentor in the late 1990s and early 2000s when <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa oceanography hosted similar <abbr title=\"National Science Foundation\">NSF<\/abbr>-funded programs.
