The goal: to pass <abbr>AP<\/abbr> exams while in high school and be exempted from introductory coursework at the university level and reap possible scholarship money.<\/p>\n<p>Now 14 teachers from nine public high schools on four islands are missing part of their summer vacation to be trained by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/\">University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span><\/a> personnel to teach the state&#8217;s newest <abbr>AP<\/abbr> class in the fall: computer science principles (CSP). <abbr>UH<\/abbr> secured the $1 million grant from the National Science Foundation&#8217;s <abbr title=\"Science Technology Engineering and Math\">STEM<\/abbr>+C program for the <a href=\"http:\/\/maui.hawaii.edu\/csp4hi\/\">Computer Science Principles for <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> training<\/a>, which ran June 18&#8211;22 at <a href=\"https:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/\"><abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa<\/a>.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_81354\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-81354\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/manoa-computer-science-principles-auerbach-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-81354\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/manoa-computer-science-principles-auerbach-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/manoa-computer-science-principles-auerbach-630x353.jpg 630w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/manoa-computer-science-principles-auerbach.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-81354\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Steve Auerbach, director of Pacific Center for Advanced Technology Training at Honolulu Community College.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&ldquo;The more our students and our youth can learn these skills, they&#8217;re going to be transferable and applicable to their careers,&rdquo; said <strong>Steve Auerbach<\/strong>, the director of <a href=\"https:\/\/pcatt.org\/\">Pacific Center for Advanced Technology Training<\/a> at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.honolulu.hawaii.edu\/\">Honolulu Community College<\/a> who serves as project co-investigator.<\/p>\n<p>Educating more computer science savvy students will have the added benefit of increasing the pipeline of <abbr>STEM<\/abbr> and cyber-educated young people flowing into the workforce. Said Auerbach, &ldquo;The more our students and youth can learn these skills, they&#8217;re going to be transferable and applicable to their careers.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Auerbach said the soon-to-be <abbr>AP<\/abbr>&#8211;<abbr>CSP<\/abbr> teachers learned subjects such as programming, data sciences and cybersecurity. &ldquo;They&#8217;re getting lesson plans, the curriculum, and they&#8217;re going to be very successful in taking the teaching back to their classroom environments.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Thrilled to be one of the first teachers to get <abbr>AP<\/abbr>&#8211;<abbr>CSP<\/abbr> teacher training is <span aria-label=\"Aiea\">&#699;Aiea<\/span> High math teacher Alicia Nakamitsu. &ldquo;I&#8217;m really excited to bring this back to our school and also to increase the diversity of professionals in computer science, to even out the girls and the boys, and the different ethnicities that are represented in the field,&rdquo; said Nakamitsu. &ldquo;And I just want to let students know that computer science is for everybody, because it touches everybody&#8217;s lives.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Dodi Pritchett, a special education teacher at King Kekaulike High on Maui, said she and fellow teacher Loren Ayresman are also looking forward to leading the new <abbr>AP<\/abbr>&#8211;<abbr>CSP<\/abbr> class. Said Pritchett, &ldquo;One of the goals that Loren and I have been brainstorming during this training is to collaborate together and really make the computer science course really accessible for all students, including those with special needs.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Teachers in the first cohort:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span> schools: Castle High \u2013 Dan Johnson;  <span aria-label=\"Aiea\">&#699;Aiea<\/span> High \u2013 Ken Kang, Alicia Nakamitsu; Leilehua High \u2013 Brent Yamagata, Darren Kojima.<\/li>\n<li>Maui schools: King Kekaulike \u2013 Loren Ayersman, Dodi Pritchett; Maui High \u2013 Keith Imada; Lahainaluna High \u2013 Tad Luckey; Baldwin High \u2013 Casey Watanabe.<\/li>\n<li><span aria-label=\"Kauai\">Kaua&#699;i<\/span> schools: <span aria-label=\"Kapaa\">Kapa&#699;a<\/span> High \u2013 Liz Steiner, Richard Sypniewski; Martin Antonio.<\/li>\n<li><span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Island schools: Konawaena High \u2013 Paul Daugherty.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This first summer training of a planned three-year program benefits from a brain trust leadership involving multiple <abbr>UH<\/abbr> campuses. Principal investigator <strong>Debasis Bhattacharya<\/strong> is the program coordinator for applied business and information technology at <a href=\"https:\/\/maui.hawaii.edu\/\"><abbr>UH<\/abbr> Maui College<\/a>.
