They donate their time and expertise to help train the next generation of health workers studying at the University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> at M\u0101noa <a href=\"http:\/\/jabsom.hawaii.edu\/\">John A. Burns School of Medicine<\/a> (<abbr>JABSOM<\/abbr>) and <a href=\"http:\/\/nursing.hawaii.edu\/\">School of Nursing and Dental Hygiene<\/a>, and <abbr>UH<\/abbr> Hilo&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/pharmacy.uhh.hawaii.edu\/\">Daniel K. Inouye College of Pharmacy<\/a>.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_81188\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-81188\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/manoa-jabsom-heathcare-tax-credit.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/manoa-jabsom-heathcare-tax-credit-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-81188\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/manoa-jabsom-heathcare-tax-credit-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/manoa-jabsom-heathcare-tax-credit-630x353.jpg 630w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/manoa-jabsom-heathcare-tax-credit.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-81188\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Governor Ige signs the preceptor tax credit into law while state lawmakers look on.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In clinics and in their offices statewide, these dedicated health workers&#8212;many of whom are <abbr>UH<\/abbr> alumni&#8212;allow future doctors, advanced practice nurses and pharmacists to learn first-hand from experienced professionals while they are &ldquo;on the job.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>On June 13, a new law was signed to allow these vital volunteer professors, called &ldquo;preceptors,&rdquo; to receive an annual tax credit of up to $5,000 per year in recognition of their longstanding service to the state.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;The health preceptor tax credit will enable more students to go into pharmacy school, nursing school and medical school because they&#8217;ll have the professionals, the volunteer professionals, to help them at the end of their journey,&rdquo; said Senator Roz Baker, chair of the state Senate&#8217;s Commerce, Consumer Protection and Health Committee, referring to the clinical training years of medical school, and post-graduate training of medical residents.<\/p>\n<p><abbr>JABSOM<\/abbr> relies on more than 1,200 volunteer clinical faculty, and Dean <a href=\"http:\/\/jabsom.hawaii.edu\/minimedschool\/faculty\/facultyHedges.html\"><strong>Jerris Hedges<\/strong><\/a> said the <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> law may be unique in extending the tax credit benefit to those training advanced practice nurses and pharmacists.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;That is forward-looking, actually, because increasingly our community-based clinical training involves interdisciplinary teams of health providers,&rdquo;
