  {"id":8085,"date":"2012-07-06T12:55:48","date_gmt":"2012-07-06T22:55:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/?p=8085"},"modified":"2021-12-09T12:35:48","modified_gmt":"2021-12-09T22:35:48","slug":"local-community-makes-uh-d-c-exhibit-shine","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2012\/07\/06\/local-community-makes-uh-d-c-exhibit-shine\/","title":{"rendered":"Local community makes <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> D.C. exhibit shine"},"content":{"rendered":"<span class=\"span-reading-time rt-reading-time\" style=\"display: block;\"><span class=\"rt-label rt-prefix\">Reading time: <\/span> <span class=\"rt-time\"> 2<\/span> <span class=\"rt-label rt-postfix\">minutes<\/span><\/span><p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/\">University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span><\/a> has welcomed hundreds of thousands of visitors to its exhibit tents during this year&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.festival.si.edu\/\">Smithsonian Folklife Festival<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>Visitors have tried hula, lauhala weaving and taro pounding. They also learned about navigating by the stars, lomi lomi, aquaponics and taro patches. <\/p>\n<p>The exhibit, however, has been about more than the University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>. It has been about the community working together. <\/p>\n<p><abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa alumnus Rick Barboza co-owns <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hawaiiannativeplants.com\/\">Hui K&#363; Maoli Ola<\/a>, one of the largest Native Hawaiian plant nurseries in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>. The company transported the taro patch exhibit and aquaponics plants free of charge. <\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;We brought over nine boxes of plants&#8212;it was a six-foot-tall pallet of plants and there was a lot of plants that we were able to bring up,&rdquo; said Barboza. &ldquo;Now we got a <span aria-label=\"loi\">lo&#699;i<\/span>. Now we got a nice aquaponics system that features some native plants and Polynesian introduced plants,&rdquo; said Barboza. <\/p>\n<p>Hui K&#363; Maoli Ola also transported decorative plants used for <abbr>UH<\/abbr> exhibits and presentations. <\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;It was good, it helped to spruce up the place and really provide a sense of place for all the Hawaiians that are here,&rdquo; said Barboza. <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/maoorganicfarms.org\/\"><span aria-label=\"Mao\">Ma&#699;o<\/span> Farms<\/a> brought some of its young people to the Folklife Festival to showcase its Farmwork to Higher Education Program, which allows young people to work part-time on the farm in exchange for a monthly stipend and a scholarship to Leeward Community College. <\/p>\n<p>Derrick Kiyabu of <span aria-label=\"Mao\">Ma&#699;o<\/span> Farms says there challenges and opportunities in <span aria-label=\"Waianae\">Wai&#699;anae<\/span>. &ldquo;What we want to do is increase and equalize access to higher education out there.&rdquo; <\/p>\n<p>And it&#8217;s working.
