Credit: <abbr title=\"United States\">U.S.<\/abbr> Geological Survey.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Volcanologists at the <a href=\"https:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/\">University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> at M\u0101noa<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.soest.hawaii.edu\/soestwp\/\">School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology<\/a> (SOEST) will receive a $119,821 grant from the <abbr>U.S.<\/abbr> National Science Foundation to study the ongoing volcanic activity on <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Island. The project, Rapid: Tracking magmatic and volcanic changes in the May 2018 K\u012blauea Eruption, seeks to inform why the current volcanic activity is occurring and will help to predict future eruption activity.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Scientific data has been critical to tracking the volcanic activity on <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Island to minimize the threat to Puna families,&rdquo; Hirono said. &ldquo;This federal funding is timely and will increase the resources available to study K\u012blauea&#8217;s east rift zone and gain insight into future eruptions.&rdquo;<\/p\n\n\n\n<p>&ldquo;We are extremely grateful to the <abbr>U.S.<\/abbr> National Science Foundation, <a href=\"https:\/\/hilo.hawaii.edu\"><abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> Hilo<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/volcanoes.usgs.gov\/observatories\/hvo\/\">USGS<\/a> (United States Geological Survey) Hawaiian Volcano Observatory for funding and supporting this research into the current eruption at K\u012blauea, using a range of rapid-response tools,&rdquo; said <a href=\"http:\/\/www.soest.hawaii.edu\/GG\/people\/gg_profile_rubin_k.html\"><strong>Ken Rubin<\/strong><\/a>, principal investigator on the grant and chair of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.soest.hawaii.edu\/GG\/index.html\">Department of Geology and Geophysics<\/a> at <abbr>SOEST<\/abbr>.<\/p>\n<p>The project was funded through the National Science Foundation&#8217;s Rapid Research Response program, which is available for research on natural disasters and other unanticipated events.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/tag\/kilauea-eruption-2018\/\">Read more <em><abbr>UH<\/abbr> News<\/em> stories on the university&#8217;s work on the K\u012blauea eruption.<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Rubin, along with three other <abbr>SOEST<\/abbr> volcanologists, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.soest.hawaii.edu\/GG\/FACULTY\/tshea\/curriculum.html\"><strong>Thomas Shea<\/strong><\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.soest.hawaii.edu\/GG\/FACULTY\/JHAMMER\/\"><strong>Julia Hammer<\/strong><\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.soest.hawaii.edu\/GG\/FACULTY\/garcia\/\"><strong>Michael Garcia<\/strong><\/a>, will lead the assessment of the location and movement of magma beneath the lower east rift zone of K\u012blauea to provide information on the processes leading up to the fissures and eruption activity. This study will incorporate aerial imagery and samples of lava collected throughout the event by <abbr>UH<\/abbr> Hilo and the <abbr>USGS<\/abbr> Hawaiian Volcano Observatory to inform knowledge on volcanic processes and activities in volcanic rift zones.<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, the project also includes application of very short half-life natural radioactivity to look at volcanic conditions such as magma ascent rate and degassing.
