The new law adds $700,000 for &ldquo;last-dollar&rdquo; scholarships at seven <a href=\"http:\/\/uhcc.hawaii.edu\/\">University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> Community Colleges<\/a> statewide for the upcoming school year.<\/p>\n<p>In 2017, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2017\/04\/27\/state-leaders-fulfill-hawaiis-promise\/\">the state Legislature appropriated $1.8 million for the <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> Promise program<\/a>, providing scholarships to assure that community college students with unmet direct costs of education would receive financial aid. Students are first awarded Pell grants, <abbr>UH<\/abbr> scholarships and private scholarships before being awarded a <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> Promise Scholarship for unmet direct costs such as tuition, fees, books, supplies and local transportation.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;The Hawai\u2018i Promise program helped me out,&rdquo; said Honolulu <abbr>CC<\/abbr> student <strong>&#699;Aukai Rieman<\/strong>. &ldquo;The last two semesters I received books and I live in N\u0101n\u0101kuli so it helped with travel&#8212;that was a big thing for me.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2017\/08\/17\/last-dollar-scholarships-fulfill-promise\/\">Approximately 1,500 students benefited from <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> Promise scholarships<\/a>, with an average grant of $1,200, after the program was implemented in fall 2017 at a cost of $2.2 million. The <abbr>UH<\/abbr> Community Colleges made up the $400,000 difference from operating reserves.<\/p>\n<p>Honolulu <abbr>CC<\/abbr> student <strong>Kelley Caitano<\/strong> said, &ldquo;The scholarship itself helped me not focus on the payments I had to make on school, but actually helped me focus on school itself, so it actually took a big load off of my shoulders.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>The new funding will allow <abbr>UH<\/abbr> to actively market the program to prospective students and provide an incentive for more students to pursue higher education. It\u2019s estimated that it will allow <abbr>UH<\/abbr> to support an additional 500&#8211;600 students for the 2018&#8211;2019 academic year.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;This supplemental appropriation ensures that we can meet the projected demand for aid, in turn increasing the educational capital of this state,&rdquo; said <abbr>UH<\/abbr> Vice President for Community Colleges <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/leadership\/john-morton\/\"><strong>John Morton<\/strong><\/a>. &ldquo;We thank the legislature and the governor for their vision and support of higher education.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>There is no separate application for the <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> Promise Scholarship. Prospective students are encouraged to complete the <a href=\"https:\/\/fafsa.ed.gov\/\">Free Application for Federal Student Aid<\/a> and enroll at a <abbr>UH<\/abbr> Community College at least half time to be considered for all types of financial aid, including the <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> Promise Scholarship.
