(Photo credit: U.S. Geological Survey)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>On April 30, 2018, along the East Rift Zone of K\u012blauea Volcano on <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Island, <span aria-label=\"Puu Oo\">Pu&#699;u &#699;\u014c&#699;\u014d<\/span> crater began to collapse, followed by increased seismicity and ground motion down-rift. Small ground cracks opened near Leilani Estates on May 1&#8211;2. As of May 18, there have been 21 fissure eruptions, with some still spattering lava.<\/p>\n<p>The K\u012blauea eruption has generated extensive news coverage and University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> at M\u0101noa&#8217;s School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology (<abbr>SOEST<\/abbr>)<a href=\"http:\/\/www.soest.hawaii.edu\/GG\/\"> geology and geophysics<\/a> volcanologists and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.soest.hawaii.edu\/met\/\">atmospheric science<\/a> fog experts have been sought by local, national and international media to provide background and information.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/tag\/kilauea-eruption-2018\/\">Read more <em><abbr>UH<\/abbr> News<\/em> stories on the university&#8217;s work on the K\u012blauea eruption.<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Elevated earthquake activity continues and volcanic gas emissions remain elevated throughout the area downwind of the fissures.
