(Photo courtesy of <abbr>HESTEMP<\/abbr>)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> at M\u0101noa\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eng.hawaii.edu\/\"> College of Engineering<\/a> was among three national universities selected in 2015 by <abbr title=\"National Aeronautics and Space Administration\">NASA<\/abbr> to strengthen curriculum and curricular pathways in science, technology engineering and mathematics (<abbr>STEM<\/abbr>), and attract, retain and support the success of underrepresented students in their degree programs. The cooperative agreement award for the three-year project that began in 2015, called <a href=\"http:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/hestemp\/\"><span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>\u2019s Engaged <abbr title=\"Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics\">STEM<\/abbr> Pathways<\/a> (<abbr title=\"Hawaii Engaged STEM Pathways\">HESTEMP<\/abbr>), totals $499,534. <\/p>\n<p><abbr>HESTEMP<\/abbr> aims to establish engaged and sustainable educational pathways for <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>\u2019s underrepresented and underserved high school students to help them pursue and achieve advanced <abbr>STEM<\/abbr> degrees. This effort focuses on involving students of Native Hawaiian, Samoan, Micronesian and Filipino backgrounds. <abbr>HESTEMP<\/abbr>\u2019s three <abbr>NASA<\/abbr>-prioritized key projects focus on volcanic aerosols, ocean color and small satellite technology. <\/p>\n<p>Activities have been conducted on <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span> and <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Island, in partnerships with Wai\u0101kea High School, Moanalua High School, <span aria-label=\"Kapiolani\">Kapi&#699;olani<\/span> Community College, <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> Hilo, <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Space Flight Laboratory as well as <abbr>NASA<\/abbr> Ames Research Center. Organizers have also extended the project to <span aria-label=\"Kauai\">Kaua&#699;i<\/span> and have plans to expand to Maui. <\/p>\n<p>The <abbr>HESTEMP<\/abbr> team consists of <strong>Dilmurat Azimov<\/strong>, principal investigator and assistant professor of mechanical engineering; <strong>Myhraliza Aala<\/strong>, College of Engineering <abbr>STEM<\/abbr> marketing and public affairs officer; <strong>Karen Selph<\/strong> and <strong>Steve Howell<\/strong>, Department of Oceanography; and <strong>Eric Pilger<\/strong>, <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Space Flight Laboratory. <\/p>\n<h2>Project progress<\/h2>\n<p>Since <abbr>HESTEMP<\/abbr>\u2019s inception two years ago, the number of students (high school, community college and university students combined) involved has increased from 10-12 to more than 100 and the number of key projects has increased from 3 to 10. The project has also increased the number of mentors from 1 to 5 and the number of schools and community colleges involved has increased from 3 to over 9. <\/p>\n<p>One of <abbr>HESTEMP<\/abbr>\u2019s key projects, unmanned aerial systems, has advanced to become a stand-alone <abbr>NASA<\/abbr>-funded project, with extended geography covering not only the Hawaiian islands, but also all Central Pacific Islands. <\/p>\n<p>Seven <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa and <abbr>UH<\/abbr> Hilo undergraduate students have been awarded fully paid <abbr>NASA<\/abbr> summer internships to be conducted at the <abbr>NASA<\/abbr> Ames Research Center. Four undergraduate students have matriculated to graduate school at <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa to pursue advanced degrees in <abbr>STEM<\/abbr>. <\/p>\n<p><abbr>NASA<\/abbr> Johnson Space Center has also become a new project collaborator with significant contributions in terms of funds, consultations and internships.  <\/p>\n<h2><abbr>HESTEMP<\/abbr> conference<\/h2>\n<p>The second annual <abbr>HESTEMP<\/abbr> conference will be held on May 5, 8 a.m.&#8211;4:30 p.m., at <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Institute of Geophysics room 110. There will be engaging student presentations ranging from atmospheric aerosol studies, unmanned aerial systems, advancements in space technologies and ocean color studies.
