The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/president\/awards\/2018-recipients\/\">2018 Awards<\/a>\u00a0ceremony was held on April 27 at <a href=\"http:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/liveonstage\/kennedy-theatre\/\">Kennedy Theatre<\/a>*.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;As the university strives to provide a rigorous and meaningful learning experience for all of our students, we know that it truly takes a campus-wide team of dedicated faculty, advisors and staff to develop graduates who are well educated and prepared to enter a global 21st century workforce,&rdquo; said <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa Interim Chancellor <strong>David Lassner<\/strong>. &ldquo;These exceptionally talented and hard-working individuals are being recognized for excellence and innovation in teaching, research, academic advising, mentoring, community service, encouraging and nurturing diversity and service to this campus.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<h2>2018 M\u0101noa Awards winners<\/h2>\n<h3>Robert W. Clopton Award for Distinguished Service to the Community<\/h3>\n<p>The Robert W. Clopton Award for Outstanding Service to the Community recognizes a\u00a0<abbr>UH<\/abbr>\u00a0M\u0101noa faculty member for playing a socially significant role by applying intellectual leadership and academic expertise to the improvement of the community.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Jill Omori<\/strong>, associate professor at the <a href=\"http:\/\/jabsom.hawaii.edu\/\">John A. Burns School of Medicine<\/a><br \/>\nDeeply integrated with Omori\u2019s teaching and research at\u00a0<abbr>UH<\/abbr>\u00a0M\u0101noa is her service to the homeless, which has had a significant and profound impact upon the lives of thousands in our island communities through the Homeless Outreach and Medical Education (H.O.M.E.) project.<\/p>\n<p>Read more about the <a href=\"https:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/president\/awards\/2018-recipients\/\">Robert W. Clopton Award for Distinguished Service to the Community.<\/a><\/p>\n<h3>M\u0101noa Chancellor\u2019s Citation for Meritorious Teaching<\/h3>\n<p>The Chancellor\u2019s Citation for Meritorious Teaching recognizes M\u0101noa faculty members who have made significant contributions to teaching and student learning.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Henri Casanova<\/strong>, professor in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ics.hawaii.edu\/\">Information and Computer Sciences Department<\/a><br \/>\nCasanova\u2019s course materials contain multiple pathways for students to explore both traditional and cutting-edge research through interactive in-class programming exercises, code examples inserted throughout presentations and carefully designed assignments for out-of-class problem solving.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Lysandra H. Cook<\/strong>, associate professor in the <a href=\"https:\/\/coe.hawaii.edu\/\">College of Education<\/a><br \/>\nA strong influence on Cook and an expression of her commitment to teaching and learning is Project Laulima, a federally-funded grant on which she has served as project director since 2012.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Priyam Das<\/strong>, associate professor in the <a href=\"http:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/durp\/\">Department of Urban and Regional Planning<\/a><br \/>\nHer wide range of teaching practices include innovations like place-based projects that situate students in community settings.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Richard R. Day<\/strong>, professor in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/sls\/\">Department of Second Language Studies<\/a><br \/>\nDay inspires students to envision the art and science of teaching as achievable for them &ldquo;rather than as a form of unreachable wizardry.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Randall K. Minas<\/strong>, assistant professor in the <a href=\"http:\/\/shidler.hawaii.edu\/itm\">Information Technology Management Department<\/a><br \/>\nMinus brings a new area of expertise to undergraduate majors: how to analyze the neurophysiological and psychophysiological responses of users of information technology.<\/p>\n<p><strong>A Zachary Trimble<\/strong>, assistant professor in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www4.eng.hawaii.edu\/\">College of Engineering<\/a><br \/>\nThrough teaching practices based on the Feynman Technique, Trimble generates discovery, nourishes passion and stimulates curiosity in students, enabling them to develop critical thinking competency.<\/p>\n<p>Read more about the <a href=\"https:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/president\/awards\/2018-recipients\/\">M\u0101noa Chancellor\u2019s Citation for Meritorious Teaching.<\/a><\/p>\n<h3>M\u0101noa Chancellor\u2019s Award for Outstanding Service<\/h3>\n<p>The Chancellor\u2019s Award for Outstanding Service honors M\u0101noa staff members who demonstrate outstanding work performance, service and leadership.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Gina M. Bagarino<\/strong>, office assistant in the <a href=\"https:\/\/cms.ctahr.hawaii.edu\/home.aspx\">College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources<\/a><br \/>\nWith her diverse work experience and amicable personality, Bagarino has become the heart and soul of the office and has proved to be a dedicated individual.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Marcus N. Hayden<\/strong>, fiscal manager in the <a href=\"https:\/\/cms.ctahr.hawaii.edu\/home.aspx\">College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources<\/a><br \/>\nA 13-year employee of the university, Hayden joined\u00a0CTAHR\u00a0in 2016 and has encouraged growth and development amongst his staff and helped regain control of the college\u2019s budget.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Jameson Ramelb<\/strong>, landscape manager in <a href=\"http:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/bgm\/\">Buildings and Grounds Management<\/a><br \/>\nDuring his four years with the department, Ramelb has made significant improvements to the\u00a0<abbr>UH<\/abbr>\u00a0M\u0101noa campus and motivates staff to take on projects they can be proud of.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Valerie J. Yontz<\/strong>, specialist and practicum coordinator in the <a href=\"http:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/publichealth\/\">Office of Public Health Studies<\/a><br \/>\nYontz is credited for her &ldquo;exceptional contributions to the achievement of the department\u2019s program objectives and success.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Read more about the <a href=\"https:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/president\/awards\/2018-recipients\/\">M\u0101noa Chancellor\u2019s Award for Outstanding Service.<\/a><\/p>\n<h3>Dr. Amefil &ldquo;Amy&rdquo; Agbayani Faculty Diversity Enhancement Award<\/h3>\n<p>The Faculty Diversity Enhancement Award from the\u00a0<abbr>UH<\/abbr>\u00a0M\u0101noa Commission on Inclusion and Diversity recognizes a faculty member who has demonstrated an ongoing commitment to enhancing diversity.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Erin <span aria-label=\"Kahunawaikaala\">Kahunawaika&#699;ala<\/span> Wright<\/strong>, assistant professor in the <a href=\"https:\/\/coe.hawaii.edu\/\">College of Education<\/a><br \/>\nWright\u2019s deep understanding of student affairs combined with her presence and scholarship as a Native Hawaiian faculty member inspires Native Hawaiian, local and other students to aspire to earn terminal degrees.<\/p>\n<p>Read more about the <a href=\"https:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/president\/awards\/2018-recipients\/\">Dr. Amefil &ldquo;Amy&rdquo; Agbayani Faculty Diversity Enhancement Award.<\/a><\/p>\n<h3>Peter V. Garrod Distinguished Graduate Mentoring Award<\/h3>\n<p>Established by the <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa Graduate Division in 2005, the Distinguished Graduate Mentoring Award allows graduate students to nominate faculty for excellent mentoring, one of the foundations of outstanding graduate education.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Tamara B. Ticktin<\/strong>, professor in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.botany.hawaii.edu\/\">Department of Botany<\/a><br \/>\nOver the past 17 years, Ticktin has had the privilege of mentoring and learning from a large and diverse lab of graduate students from\u00a0<span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>\u00a0and across the globe.<\/p>\n<p>Read more about the <a href=\"https:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/president\/awards\/2018-recipients\/\">Peter V. Garrod Distinguished Graduate Mentoring Award.<\/a><\/p>\n<h3>Outstanding Academic Advisor and Academic Unit of the Year Award<\/h3>\n<p>The Council of Academic Advisors recognizes an individual or unit who, over the past two years, has demonstrated excellence and\/or innovation in advising, and\/or has made a significant contribution to the advising community.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ernest &ldquo;Niki&rdquo; Libarios Jr<\/strong>., was the director of the <a href=\"https:\/\/coe.hawaii.edu\/admissions-advising\/advising-osas\">College of Education Office of Student Academic Services<\/a><br \/>\nAs an academic advisor, Libarios worked tirelessly to support underrepresented students in higher education, securing multiple grants to provide scholarships, host campus visits and waive test fees.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/undergrad\/mac\/\">The Manoa Advising Center<\/a><br \/>\nSince its creation in 2008, the M\u0101noa Advising Center (MAC) has been assisting students in selecting a major that best fits their interests, abilities and goals.<\/p>\n<p>Read more about the <a Award<\/h3>\n<p>The Student Excellence in Research Award is awarded by the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research in recognition of outstanding scholarly research endeavors by students while they pursue a degree at the doctoral, master\u2019s or bachelor\u2019s level.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Samuel Grunblatt<\/strong>, doctoral student in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ifa.hawaii.edu\/\">Institute for Astronomy<\/a><br \/>\nGrunblatt studies exoplanets (planets outside our solar system) orbiting distant red giant stars, which are future versions of our Sun.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Zhibin Liang<\/strong>, doctoral student in the <a href=\"https:\/\/cms.ctahr.hawaii.edu\/Default.aspx?alias=cms.ctahr.hawaii.edu\/MBBE\">Department of Molecular Biosciences and Bioengineering<\/a><br \/>\nLiang is passionate about neurosciences and conducts innovative and rigorous investigations on Alzheimer\u2019s drug discovery.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Nathaniel Wehr<\/strong>, master\u2019s student in the <a href=\"https:\/\/cms.ctahr.hawaii.edu\/nrem\/home.aspx\">Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Management<\/a><br \/>\nWehr\u2019s research examines the ecological relationship between feral pigs and soil microbial and macroinvertebrate communities, relationships that have been largely undescribed and represent important knowledge gaps in the management of invasive species, as well Award.<\/a><\/p>\n<h3>Student Employee of the Year Award<\/h3>\n<p>The Student Employee of the Year Program was created in 1986 by the M\u0101noa Career Center to recognize and highlight the achievements and contributions of student employees on the\u00a0<abbr>UH<\/abbr>\u00a0M\u0101noa campus.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Kuaiwi Laka Kahiwakapu Pili I Haupapanui Makua<\/strong>, undergraduate student in <a href=\"https:\/\/coe.hawaii.edu\/academics\/kinesiology-rehabilitation-science\">kinesiology and rehabilitation science<\/a><br \/>\nMakua, who works as a Native Hawaiian Student Services Scholar Center assistant, effectively utilizes the concepts she is actively learning in her classes, the experiences she has had as a student employee and in her volunteer work and the values she developed in her home and family life to create accessible lessons through which she can teach others.<\/p>\n<p>Read more about the <a
