So it was a celebratory atmosphere when the University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> at M\u0101noa&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/publichealth\/\">Office of Public Health Services<\/a> (<abbr>OPHS<\/abbr>), an academic unit in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/sswork\/\">Myron B. Thompson School of Social Work<\/a>, celebrated National Public Health Week and the office&#8217;s 50-plus-year history.<\/p>\n<p>More than 225 people gathered at Caf\u00e9 Julia in the Richards Street <abbr title=\"Young Women's Christian Association\">YWCA<\/abbr> to acknowledge the importance of public health. Commendations also were received from U.S. Senators Brian Schatz and Mazie Hirono.<\/p>\n<p>Professor <a href=\"https:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/publichealth\/directory\/kathryn-braun\"><strong>Kathryn Braun<\/strong><\/a>, director and chair of <abbr>OPHS<\/abbr>, reminded the gathering that life-extending public health advances over 50 years include public sanitation, clean water, disease control and a tobacco policy.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;I&#8217;m proud of the role <abbr>UH<\/abbr> public health has played in training public health professionals who now work in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>, the continental U.S. and around the world,&rdquo; she said.<\/p>\n<p>Added <a href=\"https:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/publichealth\/directory\/valerie-yontz\"><strong>Valerie Yontz<\/strong><\/a>, <abbr>OPHS<\/abbr> practicum coordinator, &ldquo;One of the reasons why I love public health is that it is inclusive&#8212;it includes people. We try to help those that have some disadvantages get equality with those who have abundant resources.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>The <em><abbr>UH<\/abbr> Public Health Faculty Research Profile<\/em> publication was also officially launched at the event. <a href=\"http:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/publichealth\/sites\/manoa.hawaii.edu.publichealth\/files\/downloads\/2018_publichealth_researchprofile.pdf\">Download the (<small><abbr title=\"portable document format\">PDF<\/abbr><\/small>) of the publication<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Other comments from alumni in attendance:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Through my public health training, I learned that much of what determines our health status is found outside the traditional clinic&#8212;from education, jobs and affordable housing, to community safety and access to healthy food.&rdquo;&#8212;<strong>Robert Hirokawa<\/strong>, chief executive officer, <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Primary Care Association.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Public health helps us to focus on the root of the problem, and addressing social determinants is core to public health. We have a responsibility to address injustice in its many forms.&rdquo;&#8212;<strong>Trisha Kajimura<\/strong>, executive director, Mental Health America of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;I grew up in this program. I received both my <abbr title=\"Master of Public Health\">MPH<\/abbr> and <abbr title=\"Doctor of Public Health\">DrPH<\/abbr> degrees here and now I&#8217;m faculty. I am grateful that I was able to stay in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> and not leave the state to get my degrees.
