  {"id":7831,"date":"2012-06-28T21:00:19","date_gmt":"2012-06-29T07:00:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/?p=7831"},"modified":"2021-03-30T14:01:49","modified_gmt":"2021-03-31T00:01:49","slug":"hawaii-congressional-team-honors-uh-delegation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2012\/06\/28\/hawaii-congressional-team-honors-uh-delegation\/","title":{"rendered":"<span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> congressional team honors <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> delegation"},"content":{"rendered":"<span class=\"span-reading-time rt-reading-time\" style=\"display: block;\"><span class=\"rt-label rt-prefix\">Reading time: <\/span> <span class=\"rt-time\"> 2<\/span> <span class=\"rt-label rt-postfix\">minutes<\/span><\/span><p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/\">University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span><\/a> has a huge presence at this year&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.festival.si.edu\/\">Smithsonian Folklife Festival<\/a> in Washington, D.C., where students, faculty, staff and a supporting community are sharing their knowledge of agriculture, Hawaiian health and healing, aquaponics and other specialties with more than a million visitors from around the world. <\/p>\n<p>That hasn&#8217;t escaped <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>&#8217;s congressional delegation, which, along with Governor Neil Abercrombie, hosted a mahalo reception for festival participants in the nation&#8217;s capitol on June 28. <\/p>\n<p><abbr>UH<\/abbr> hula h&#257;lau chanted and danced, and Senator Daniel Akaka&#8217;s rendition of the <em>Hawaiian Lullaby<\/em> received resounding applause. <\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;I&#8217;m so proud to be amongst you here from <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> because you&#8217;re just one of 20 universities in this country that was invited to be part of the Smithsonian Folklife Festival,&rdquo; Akaka said. <\/p>\n<p>Senior Senator Daniel Inouye expressed pride and support for the university&#8217;s work in reaching up to 1.5 million people on The National Mall. <\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;The <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> delegation is extremely proud of the work you&#8217;re doing and we&#8217;d like to welcome the 80 <abbr>UH<\/abbr> students and faculty members who have come here to show the rest of the world and the rest of the nation that we in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> are now number one,&rdquo; Inouye said. <\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;People on the mall coming by and they see what <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> is, it is the only way we are going to get everyone to understand how special a place <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> is, how wonderful aloha is and what it all means,\u201d said U.S. Representative Colleen Hanabusa. <\/p>\n<p>Congressional leaders say a world stage like the Smithsonian Folklife Festival can only help boost <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>&#8217;s tourism industry, spark and increase interest in continuing research in specialties like aquaponics, and raise the potential for millions of dollars in research grants. <\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;There are a lot of people who are very interested in sustainability issues in terms of food and I think this is a revelation to them that there was a culture, that they protected the <span aria-label=\"aina\">&#699;aina<\/span>,&rdquo; said U.S. Representative Mazie Hirono. <\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;I don&#8217;t know that there&#8217;s ever been a time when I&#8217;ve been prouder of the university and more conscious of the very special role that the University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> plays here in the United States today,&rdquo; said <abbr>UH<\/abbr> President <strong>M.R.C.
