This annual event celebrated the creation of and harvest from\u00a0Ka M\u0101la o Niuhelewai (The Garden of Niuhelewai), as well as Native Hawaiian cultural traditions and sustainability.<\/p>\n<p>This year&#8217;s\u00a0event featured imu (earthen oven) prepared food;\u00a0<span aria-label=\"kui\">ku&#699;i<\/span> &#699;ai (poi made by hand pounding\u00a0kalo) and\u00a0&#699;uala (sweet potato) from the m\u0101la; music\u00a0provided by Honolulu <abbr>CC<\/abbr> faculty, staff, students and community musicians;\u00a0interactive activities;\u00a0information exhibits; and\u00a0the college\u02bbs 4th annual repurpose\/recycle\/upcycle contest\u00a0Trash to Treasure.<\/p>\n<p>K\u016blana <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>: Hawaiian Programs Division, Career Services (Career\u00a0Exploration), Student Life and Development, and the Sustainability Committee collaborated to make this year\u02bbs event a reality.<\/p>\n<p>Participants were encouraged to\u00a0practice sustainability by\u00a0bringing their own reusable\u00a0containers, utensils and beverage\u00a0flask for their lunch.\u00a0One of the event&#8217;s goals was to maintain\u00a0m\u0101lama &#699;\u0101ina by\u00a0eliminating the use of paper goods and Styrofoam products and alleviating the amount of trash produced.\u00a0If participants did not bring containers they could construct\u00a0plates\u00a0by weaving\u00a0launiu (coconut leaves) or ti leaves. Students could receive a reusable lunch container bought with student funds, after they completed an &ldquo;event passport.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Each year the Honolulu <abbr>CC<\/abbr> &#699;ohana is challenged to\u00a0re-purpose material(s) usually\u00a0thrown away into something\u00a0with\u00a0a practical or artistic purpose in the Trash to Treasure contest.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>This year\u00a0there were\u00a0two competition\u00a0categories: student projects and\u00a0faculty\/staff\/admin Projects. The competition attracted more than 30 entries.
