With a new facility scheduled to open in early 2013, the UH<\/abbr> Cancer Center has been awarded renewal of its National Cancer Institute designation.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Following a competitive renewal process, the National Cancer Institute<\/a> has awarded the University of Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> Cancer Center<\/a> another five years of recognition and funding.<\/p>\n

The designation means that the center, a research unit of the University of Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> at Mānoa<\/a>, will continue to be recognized among the nation’s best cancer centers characterized by scientific excellence and the capacity to integrate a range of scientific approaches to focus on the problem of cancer.<\/p>\n

The UH<\/abbr> Cancer Center received NCI<\/abbr> designation in 1996 and continues to be the only NCI<\/abbr>-designated research facility throughout Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> and the Pacific Rim. It is one of only 66 research organizations in the country designated by the National Cancer Institute.<\/p>\n

This affiliation requires stringent and constant evaluation, yet brings the distinction of being recognized among the best cancer research institutions in the world. This recognition will ensure that the center will continue delivering cutting-edge treatments for cancer patients and conducting groundbreaking research to develop more advanced treatments.<\/p>\n

“The recognition and approval by the NCI<\/abbr> is a great honor and a reflection of the hard work and dedication by our faculty and staff as well as the tremendous support of President M.R.C. Greenwood, Chancellor Virgina Hinshaw, the legislature, and our partner hospitals,” said UH<\/abbr> Cancer Center Director Michele Carbone. “Remaining an NCI<\/abbr>-designated Cancer Center will allow us to continue to discover and develop new therapies that will lead to our goal of creating a world where cancer no longer exists.”<\/p>\n
