Ray Hawke<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>An international organization has named a crater on the moon after a former <a href=\"http:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/\">University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> at M\u0101noa<\/a> scientist described as a &ldquo;fearless advocate for lunar exploration.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>The International Astronomical Union\u2013Planetary Nomenclature Committee approved the name <a href=\"https:\/\/planetarynames.wr.usgs.gov\/Feature\/15723\">&ldquo;Hawke&rdquo;<\/a> for a 13.2-kilometer-diameter impact crater on the moon in honor and remembrance of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.higp.hawaii.edu\/prpdc\/memorial.html\"><strong>B. Ray Hawke<\/strong><\/a>, a lunar researcher at the <abbr>UH<\/abbr> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.higp.hawaii.edu\/\"><span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Institute for Geophysics and Planetology<\/a> from 1978 to 2015.<\/p>\n<p>Befitting Hawke&#8217;s research interests and name, the crater positioned at 66.6oS, 128.7oE, just north of the Schr\u00f6dinger basin is a young &ldquo;rayed crater&rdquo; (i.e., one with bright radial streaks of material thrown out during the formation of the crater). It contains deposits of impact melt, which formed due to the extreme heat associated with the impact event that formed the crater.<\/p>\n<p>Hawke&#8217;s lunar geology interests included impact craters and volcanic deposits. He was a pioneer in advocating the use of the resources associated with pyroclastic (products of volcanic explosions) deposits by future inhabitants of the moon.<\/p>\n<p>His scientific studies involved active collaborations with colleagues in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> and around the world, and their success was due to his generosity. He shared his ideas and knowledge and gave his time to help others.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to his outstanding research career, Hawke was the founding director of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.higp.hawaii.edu\/prpdc\/\">NASA Pacific Regional Planetary Data Center<\/a> (PRPDC) at <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa from 1984 until his death on January 24, 2015.<\/p>\n<p>Said current PRPDC Director <a href=\"https:\/\/www.higp.hawaii.edu\/~pmm\/\"><strong>Pete Mouginis-Mark<\/strong><\/a>, &ldquo;Due to B.
