(Photo courtesy: <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa College of Languages, Linguistics &#038; Literature)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> at M\u0101noa <a href=\"http:\/\/lll.hawaii.edu\/\">College of Languages, Linguistics &#038; Literature<\/a> and Japan\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ninjal.ac.jp\/english\/info\/\">National Institute for Japanese Language and Linguistics<\/a> (<abbr>NINJAL<\/abbr>) have entered into a collaboration that expands endangered language research endeavors and joint resources. <\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;I\u2019m delighted that successful and fruitful collaborations between faculty in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/eall\/\">Departments of East Asian Languages and Literatures<\/a> (<abbr>EALL<\/abbr>) and <a href=\"http:\/\/ling.hawaii.edu\/\">Linguistics<\/a> and at <abbr>NINJAL<\/abbr> have resulted in such an important partnership,&rdquo; said College of Languages, Linguistics &#038; Literature Interim Dean <a href=\"http:\/\/english.hawaii.edu\/faculty\/laura-lyons\/\"><strong>Laura E. Lyons<\/strong><\/a>. &ldquo;It\u2019s an exciting time for both institutions, as we look forward to adding to our research endeavors and sharing resources.&rdquo; <\/p>\n<p>The Japanese section of the department is the largest in the nation, serving more than 1,000 students each semester, and specializes in language, linguistics and literature. The Department of Linguistics has world-renowned strengths in language documentation and conservation, as well as experimental linguistics. These strengths are particularly good matches for the priorities of <abbr>NINJAL<\/abbr>, making for an excellent partnership going forward. <\/p>\n<p><abbr>NINJAL<\/abbr> has documented various aspects of the Japanese language across regions and through the ages and today serves as an international locus of extensive studies on the languages of Japan. <\/p>\n<p><abbr>NINJAL<\/abbr> Director-General <strong>Yukinori Takubo<\/strong> and <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa Interim Chancellor <a href=\"https:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/chancellor\/about\/\"><strong>David Lassner<\/strong><\/a> signed the memorandum of understanding with leadership from both institutions present, including Lyons and School of Pacific and Asian Studies Dean <strong>R.
