Burns School of Medicine<\/a> (<abbr>JABSOM<\/abbr>) at the <a href=\"http:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/\">University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> at M\u0101noa<\/a> learned where they will begin their careers as new doctors in the next phase of training, which is required before they can begin practicing medicine on their own. The process of being accepted into post-medical school graduate medical education is called Match Day.<\/p>\n<p>The medical school students, who will receive their degrees this May, matched into 15 different medical specialties in 13 states, including <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p><abbr>JABSOM<\/abbr> continues to be a national leader in producing physicians who have primary contact with patients\u2014those working the front lines of caregiving where doctor shortages are most critically felt.<\/p>\n<p>The traditional primary-care specialties include <a href=\"http:\/\/jabsom.hawaii.edu\/departments\/fmch\/\">family medicine<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hawaiiresidency.org\/internal-medicine-residency\/internal-medicine-home\">internal medicine<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/jabsom.hawaii.edu\/departments\/peds\/\">pediatrics<\/a>, and additional primary contact fields that include emergency medicine and <a href=\"https:\/\/jabsom.hawaii.edu\/departments\/obgyn\/\">obstetrics and gynecology<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Altogether, 63 percent of the members of the <abbr>JABSOM<\/abbr> class of 2018 are becoming primary-care doctors.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_76451\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-76451\" style=\"width: 676px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/manoa-jabsom-matchday-2018.jpg\" alt=\"large group of medical students\" width=\"676\" height=\"381\" class=\"size-full wp-image-76451\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/manoa-jabsom-matchday-2018.jpg 676w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/manoa-jabsom-matchday-2018-300x169.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 676px) 100vw, 676px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-76451\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The John A.
