  {"id":7640,"date":"2012-06-25T16:04:05","date_gmt":"2012-06-26T02:04:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/?p=7640"},"modified":"2021-03-31T14:58:37","modified_gmt":"2021-04-01T00:58:37","slug":"king-kamehameha-lei-draping-ceremony-in-d-c","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2012\/06\/25\/king-kamehameha-lei-draping-ceremony-in-d-c\/","title":{"rendered":"King Kamehameha lei draping ceremony in D.C."},"content":{"rendered":"<span class=\"span-reading-time rt-reading-time\" style=\"display: block;\"><span class=\"rt-label rt-prefix\">Reading time: <\/span> <span class=\"rt-time\"> 2<\/span> <span class=\"rt-label rt-postfix\">minutes<\/span><\/span><p>The King Kamehameha Statue at Emancipation Hall at the U.S. Capitol united <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> residents and former <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> residents currently living in Washington, D.C. <\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;King Kamehameha played such a pivotal role in uniting the islands of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> and building what we have as a culture today,&rdquo; said Kohono Mossman, president of the <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> State Society of Washington, D.C. <\/p>\n<p>The culture and the king are what they celebrated at the 43rd annual lei draping ceremony, held each June to coincide with King Kamehameha Day in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>. <\/p>\n<p>The <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> State Society in D.C. officiates the ceremony to promote <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>&#8217;s culture and the aloha spirit. The group also teaches people from all walks of life about the Hawaiian culture, and helps former <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> residents living in D.C. <\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;We just try to promote opportunities for people from <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> who are up here, who want to get back with their culture, want to talk to people, to have the opportunities for them to do so,\u201d said Kohono Mossman, president of the <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> State Society. <\/p>\n<p>For the Office of Hawaiian Affairs, the annual event is Congressional recognition of one of the founding leaders that united the Hawaiian Kingdom. <\/p>\n<p><abbr>OHA<\/abbr> chair Colette Machado says the Kamehameha statute&#8217;s new location in Emancipation Hall is proof of great progress toward federal recognition. <\/p>\n<p>Millions of visitors come to Emancipation Hall each year. &ldquo;They will know that Hawaiians are in the house,&rdquo; Machado said. <\/p>\n<p><abbr>OHA<\/abbr> helped sponsor the University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>&#8217;s participation in this year&#8217;s Smithsonian Folklife Festival, which is also uniting former and current <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> residents who will celebrate <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>&#8217;s culture with more than a million visitors from around the world. <\/p>\n<h2>Smithsonian Folklife Festival<\/h2>\n<p>The University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> will be among 20 public land-grant universities to be featured in the Smithsonian Folklife Festival in Washington D.C. from June 27 to July 8, 2012. <\/p>\n<p>The festival celebrates the 150th anniversary of the signing of the Morrill Act, which paved the way for higher education for rural and working class Americans. <\/p>\n<p>The University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> exhibits will feature traditional Hawaiian health and healing practices, a mini taro patch, non-instrument navigation, medicinal herb and organic farming and much more. <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Community College&#8217;s halau Unukupukupu and the University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> at M&#257;noa&#8217;s Tuahine Troup will also perform. <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/category\/uhsmithsonian2012\/\">See more on the University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>&#8217;s Smithsonian experience.<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> State Society officiates the King Kamehameha statue lei draping ceremony in D.C. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":16,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[26,309,12],"tags":[312,947],"class_list":["post-7640","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-community","category-uhsmithsonian2012","category-video","tag-smithsonian-folklife-festival","tag-uh-system","entry","has-media"],"aioseo_notices":[],"jetpack_featured_media_url":"","_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/7640","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/16"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=7640"}],"version-history":[{"count":14,"href":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/7640\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":138371,"href":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/7640\/revisions\/138371"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=7640"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=7640"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=7640"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
