Anela Choy<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

University of Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> at M\u0101noa<\/a> alumna Anela Choy<\/strong> was recognized as an International Rising Talent during the 20th annual L’Oréal-UNESCO<\/abbr> for Women in Science Awards<\/a> in Paris. Each year, 15 outstanding young researchers from around the globe are recognized for their scientific achievements to support and encourage them as they pursue their scientific careers.<\/p>\n

Choy was honored for her work on how human activity such as fishing and pollution shape deep ocean food webs. Marine food webs encompass and support all life in the ocean, and her innovative work combines multiple tools and perspectives to understand their structure and function.<\/p>\n

This research contributes fundamental understanding of how pollution and contaminants move through food webs, and will aid in developing strategies to sustainably manage and conserve ocean ecosystems.<\/p>\n

“I’m humbled to have been selected as an International Rising Talent,” said Choy. “L’Oréal has provided invaluable support at critical junctures of my career and I’m honored to join an esteemed group of international women whose work is transforming global societies.”<\/p>\n

Choy, who completed her doctoral degree in the UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa School of Ocean, Earth Science and Technology<\/a>‘s oceanography department<\/a>, is a researcher at the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute in Moss Landing, California. In the fall, she will join the Scripps Institution of Oceanography at the University of California San Diego as an assistant professor.<\/p>\n
