The movie, a collaboration of five <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> programs, is spearheaded by the <a href=\"http:\/\/acmsystem.hawaii.edu\/\">Academy for Creative Media System<\/a> and is being recorded at the sound studio of Honolulu Community College\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.honolulu.hawaii.edu\/mele\">Music and Entertainment Learning Experience (<abbr>MELE<\/abbr>) program<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Just the level of technology and the professionalism that everybody held carrying throughout the project made it feel that we were making a very strong and concerted effort to really put forth the best project for our people,&rdquo; says Baker, who is Native Hawaiian.<\/p>\n<p>The star of the original film, <span aria-label=\"Aulii\">Auli&#699;i<\/span> Cravalho, is among those bringing the Hawaiian language version to life. At <a href=\"https:\/\/www.honolulu.hawaii.edu\/\">Honolulu <abbr title=\"Community College\">CC<\/abbr><\/a>, students and alumni are manning the sound boards as the vibrant movie plays on monitors in the darkened studio and the actors record their lines.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;This is an experience that is life changing,&rdquo; says <strong>Daniel Gilad<\/strong>, a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.uhwo.hawaii.edu\/\"><abbr>UH<\/abbr> West <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span><\/a> creative media student and Honolulu <abbr>CC<\/abbr> audio engineering graduate. &ldquo;Just seeing the production, seeing how producers from Disney approach things and the talent that was cast here, it\u2019s just an unbelievable experience.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<figure &ldquo;A lot of people don\u2019t know that this studio and music business classes are here and it\u2019s on a level that\u2019s as high if not higher than some other music facilities on the mainland and around the world.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>The premiere is slated for summer 2018, followed by the distribution of <abbr>DVD<\/abbr>s and Blu-ray discs to educational programs such as Native Hawaiian language immersion schools.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;We\u2019re doing this for educational purposes and that\u2019s always been our goal,&rdquo; says <strong>Chris Lee<\/strong>, director of the Academy for Creative Media System and executive producer of the Hawaiian language film. &ldquo;It\u2019s educational all the way through from inception, to execution and then distribution.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Baker adds that education is the basis of prosperity and helping Native Hawaiians to move forward.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Be what our ancestors were, which was really smart, literate, amazing scholars in their own right, and we can apply that to virtually every field and every walk of life so I think the University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> is a really critical base to achieving that.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<h2>Hawaiian Language <em>Moana<\/em> Who\u2019s Who<\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" Lee<\/strong>, founder and director of Academy for Creative Media (<abbr>ACM<\/abbr>) System, is the executive producer.<\/li>\n<li>Rick Dempsey, <abbr title=\"Senior Vice President\">SVP<\/abbr> Creative, for Disney Character Voices International (<abbr>DCVI<\/abbr>), is overseeing the project for Disney along with <abbr>DCVI<\/abbr> Executive Director Bryan Monroe.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Heather Haunani Giugni<\/strong>, a Native Hawaiian filmmaker and cultural specialist for <abbr>UH<\/abbr> West <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span>\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/uluulu.hawaii.edu\/\"><span aria-label=\"ulu ulu\">&#699;Ulu&#699;ulu<\/span>, <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span>\u2019s Moving Image Archive<\/a>, and <strong>Sharla Hanaoka<\/strong>, director of creative media at <abbr>UH<\/abbr> West <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span>, are producing and supervising <abbr>UH<\/abbr> West <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span> <abbr>ACM<\/abbr> students.<\/li>\n<li><abbr>UH<\/abbr> West <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span> ethnomusicologist <strong>Aaron Sal\u0101<\/strong> (above) serves as musical director.<\/li>\n<li><abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa Director of the <a href=\"http:\/\/ihlrt.seagrant.soest.hawaii.edu\/\">Institute of Hawaiian Language Research<\/a>
