  {"id":7364,"date":"2012-06-15T10:28:10","date_gmt":"2012-06-15T20:28:10","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/?p=7364"},"modified":"2021-04-07T14:53:58","modified_gmt":"2021-04-08T00:53:58","slug":"big-island-students-awarded-dorrance-scholarships","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2012\/06\/15\/big-island-students-awarded-dorrance-scholarships\/","title":{"rendered":"Big Island students awarded Dorrance Scholarships"},"content":{"rendered":"<span class=\"span-reading-time rt-reading-time\" style=\"display: block;\"><span class=\"rt-label rt-prefix\">Reading time: <\/span> <span class=\"rt-time\"> 2<\/span> <span class=\"rt-label rt-postfix\">minutes<\/span><\/span><figure id=\"attachment_3747\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3747\" style=\"width: 630px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/hilo.aerial.jpg\" alt=\"Aerial photo of <abbr\/>Âé¶¹´«Ã½Hilo campus&#8221; width=&#8221;620&#8243; height=&#8221;349&#8243; class=&#8221;size-full wp-image-3747&#8243; \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-3747\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Ten Big Island students will attend Âé¶¹´«Ã½Hilo through the new Dorrance Scholarship Program.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Ten Big Island students have become the first beneficiaries of a prestigious new scholarship program made possible by a groundbreaking partnership launched earlier this year between the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hilo.hawaii.edu\">University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> at Hilo<\/a> and the Dorrance Family Foundation.<\/p>\n<p>The Dorrance Scholarship is an innovative, four-year award designed to benefit local students who are the first in their family to attend college.<\/p>\n<p>The 2012 <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> Hilo Dorrance Scholarship recipients are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Kuliamai Aveiro-Kalaniopio of Kamuela (Kohala High School)<\/li>\n<li>Aprille Rose Cariaga of <span aria-label=\"Naalehu\">Na&#699;alehu<\/span> (<span aria-label=\"Kau\">Ka&#699;u<\/span> High School)<\/li>\n<li>Dylan Coffel of Pahoa (P&#257;hoa High School)<\/li>\n<li>Tamiah Johnson of Papaikou (Hilo High School)<\/li>\n<li>Kaiulani Kamau of Hilo (Kamehameha Schools)<\/li>\n<li>Clifford Kow, Jr. of Kailua Kona (Kealakehe High School)<\/li>\n<li>Kawehi Lopez of Hilo (Kamehameha Schools)<\/li>\n<li>Alayna Machacek of Kailua Kona (Kealakehe High School)<\/li>\n<li>Ishael Shaw-De Mello of Hilo (Wai&#257;kea High School)<\/li>\n<li>Edward Torrison of Hilo (Hilo High School)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The students will each receive $8,000 per year to attend <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> Hilo. Awards are renewable for a total of eight semesters of funding, bringing the estimated total value of each award to more than $60,000 for the entire four-year period.<\/p>\n<p>Prior to their freshman year, the students will participate in a custom-designed summer bridge program to help them transition from high school to college. In future summers, scholars will take part in international travel and employment preparation.<\/p>\n<h2>Dorrance Scholarship Programs<\/h2>\n<p><abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> Hilo&#8217;s program is an extension of the highly successful <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dorrancescholarship.org\/\">Dorrance Scholarship Programs<\/a> that have operated in Arizona for the past 13 years and have been credited with opening the doors of higher education while boosting graduation rates for more than 400 first-generation college students at the state&#8217;s three public universities.<\/p>\n<p>The Dorrance Scholarship addresses a critical need at <abbr>UH<\/abbr> Hilo, where some 70 percent of its 4,000-plus students are the first in their family to attend college. At the same time, 7 out of every 10 students depend on financial aid to fund the cost of attending college, which is the highest percentage among the 10 campuses in the <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> System.
